'41 towing a '41
G'day all,
My plan is to turn the Pickup into a lowered hot rod with no roof, flat bed, big rear fenders, side skirts and whatever else I can think of.
The trailer will be built to match the Pickup and will connect like a Semi trailer connects, I think it's called a "goose neck" trailer? The Williys will be a gasser with a few mods but for now it's all about getting the Pickup going.
This is where I'm at,
Roof's gone so is 5mm off the top of the doors and the back wall of the cab.
The hood was a challange, I've never used brass rod or solder before but I figured it was the only way to add strength. Not the best soldering job but after some cleaning up I think it looks good.
Next, the hinges and the hood in a few different postions.
I'm a newbe at chopping up kits, if you guys don't mind, I'll have a few questions throughout this build.
I'll show as many pics as I can just incase I'm doing something wrong or maybe you have a good idea.
Thanks for you time.
.Joe.

Fantastic craftsmanship!
Asking questions...? I reckon I might be learning a thing or two based on what I see so far! Can't wait for more.

Re: '41 towing a '41
In keeping with the mini prime mover and float concept can I suggest shrtening the wheelbase of the Chev and using a dualie rear wheel set up (side by side that is, not 2 axles)?
Also, hows about truck type exhaust stacks behind the cab and a load of those curly hose connections (can you tell i'm no truck expert?) between hauler & trailer?

Re: '41 towing a '41
Thanks for the feedback guys!
Zenrat, great idea man, I was thinking more along the lines of building it "car like" , (newer engine and running rear) making it ride smooth and comfortable. But a mini prime mover would be awesome.
Thanks for the chart Kynan, but forgive my dumb a$$, what does it exactly specify? 3/4Ton means GVM?? 125-1/4 means length??
Also the front of the doors have been re-shaped (3rd last photo). Once I get the chassis sorted out I'll try and open them up.
Back to the mimi hauler idea for a second, if I do this can I still heavily lower it? Also I want to use the 6.1L Hemi from the "Dodge Magnum SRT8" and maybe the front suspension. Is this a stupid idea or would it work? or would something else suit it more? I like the idea of moderizing the truck but having an old style look to it. Kind of a pro touring sleeper?
See, I told you I'd have questions

Re: '41 towing a '41
I rekon the new-school truck with a nice modern running gear would be awesome with an old school gasser hanging off the back, I dug out my 41 last night and did a bit of chopping myself. are you going to update the interior of the chevy or just cut down the door trims and have it original? stellar work on the bonnet, when youv painted it you wont be able to tell its been modded until you open it up! cant wait for more piccies!

Re: '41 towing a '41
Thanks Slowly, Are you going to build your 41 on the forum? Hope so.
The interior looks great with the bench seat in it, gives it a raw no messin' around look, I'll will give the interior an old but modern look.

Re: '41 towing a '41
clutch you are right the 3/4 ton is the GVM and the 125 1/4 inch is the wheel base. It is the distance between the center off the front and the center of the rear wheel

Yeah, ill put it up when i pinch some batteries for the camera Im thinking of doing more of a rattish one, rather than a custom now, tossing up weather to use the kit chassy, or a 51 chev one Iv chopped the roof off and trying to find a good replacement... thaught of colours yet?

Re: '41 towing a '41
Thanks guys!
Slowly, you asked what colour plans I have in mind, well I decided to go ahead and paint the Williys. Colour is Metallic red over a gold base with some light coats of lame flake followed by some clear. Lame flake is a dull clear with multi coloured flakes in it, gold, green, purple, red and orange.
This paint job looks fantastic in the direct sunlight, the slightest movement and the whole thing shimmers and shines. But a still photo doesn't capture that movement. and for some reason my camera wont pick up the purple and green flakes very well, they look like silver or white spots. What you see here is only about 25% of the actual glittery effect. The worst thing is when it's sitting on the shelf, you can't see any of the colour flakes, it just looks like a Williys with a bad metallic paint job and if it doesn't look good on the shelf then what's the point!! So I may strip it and start again. I'm hopeing for some mixed relpes, as it will help me decide what to do.
Thaks for looking...Joe..

DONT strip it man. Be proud, put it on a revolving stand and show it off. Its way way way too good to be stripped.

I hear what you're saying about the colour Joe, the bit about what's the point when it's sitting on the shelf, I have thought the same thing myself but then I love mixing custom colours too much so still do it, so leave it, it looks great.

Re: '41 towing a '41
Awesome job on the hood. Ive seen worse solder jobs from pros. Again, very nice work.
I wouldnt strip the paint either. I have a few paint jobs that do the same thing, unless they are in direct sunlight the flakes dont show up, and they dont show up in photos either. When i show them to people, I just tke them outside and look at the look on thier faces when they see them as they were meant to be. After all 1:1 paintwork always looks best in full sunlight.

Re: '41 towing a '41
Metallic and especially metalflake does not photograph well, so no need for concern and I'm with the others. it looks great. Maybe a spotlight when it's parked on the shelf will ensure the colour pops like it should, or do as it seems many of us do, take it outsode every ow and then to remind yourself how good it turned out.
As for the work on the pick-up, that's awesome considering your comment about not having done this before. It's inspired me to keep trying things I've not yet attempted and I just hope they turn out half as good as yours.
