The gastro truck lives!
This is a ’50 Ford F1 pick up I started about 18 months ago as part of GAS #6 but lost interest after a bout of gastro left me feeling sick every time I looked at it.
Time heals all wounds as they say and I have been plugging away at it over the last few weeks getting it ready for paint.
Gotta love how easy these trucks are to lower. I just hung the rear springs upside down and moved the front axle inside the front springs and instant drop job!
I never liked the stock front, so it’s been modified to represent a later model. I will make a custom grill to fill the hole when I get some paint on.
The engine is a big block Chev out of an AMT ’37 Chevy. It’ll get a blower and a set of double pumpers down the line.
The wheels are home made steelies with BMF trim rings and tyres are from my spares box with painted wide whites.
Hoping to get some colour on next week, by which time the engine and interior should be done too. Fingers crossed. Then I want to make some decals to turn it into the MRK shop truck.

Like the look of this so far! Good bodywork on the front end, looks factory. What sort of grille are you thinking?
Re: The gastro truck lives!
Nice work so far Bryce, has a great ride height and the front looks way better.

Re: The gastro truck lives!
I was dreading to see what you called the gastro truck in the PM but now it makes perfect sense . Looking good .
You said the wheels were "home made steelies" , how did you make them ?

Re: The gastro truck lives!
At first I thought it was going to be an old "dunny cart" truck hotted up, but I can see now that "gastro boy" is the way to go. I think there will be another magazine story coming up for this one?

Re: The gastro truck lives!
might be a sh!!ty story Tezza . Truck looks good Bryce , nice to know its easy to lower too
Re: The gastro truck lives!
Thanks for the kind words guys.
I’m thinking some sort of Desote-style custom thing – it will use a few sets of bumperettes from an AMT ’49 Ford. Thanks to Fred and Ian for their generosity.
The wheels are actually stock steelies from Daisy Duke’s jeep which I have sleeved in the outer rim of a set of ’53 Chevy wheels. I needed the extra large diameter as I am running 1/24 scale tyres as they better suit the big truck look.

Re: The gastro truck lives!
I was expecting some sort of mobile food van like the dog burger vans you see at events.
I also dislike the stock '50 front end. Good work at getting rid of it.

Thanks guys!
Got the engine plumbed up today. You gotta love these old trucks - you can fit a blower under the bonnet…

Re: The gastro truck lives!
Thanks guys.
Trim rings are real easy to do with BMF - it just takes a lot of time and patience. I did these four while sitting in front of the TV one night.

Re: The gastro truck lives!
Got some colour on this puppy last week. Pretty bright, but should be a good base for some homemade black decals. Gonna let this sit for a few weeks and then I’ll slap it all together some time next month.
