Alclad - wow! Empty Alclad - wow!

Post by zenrat Mon 04 Oct 2010, 9:28 am

I have seen the light! It's reflecting brightly off a set of resin minilites.

I was never convinced about the idea of using alclad. It seemed a lot of fiddling about for what wasn't a guaranteed result.
Boy was I wrong.
I painted Ms Norm's wheels with it at the weekend. I'd already half heartedly sprayed them with gloss black enamel. It wasn't super shiny but was OK.
Set airbrush to 15psi. Fill cup with Alclad and spray. It looked dull and crap and I though i'd put it on too heavy making sure it went into all the nooks and crannies.
Went away for 15 minutes. Came back to do the second coat and found it had developed a bit of a shine as it dried.
That looked promising so I put the second coat on and went away again for about 1/2 hour this time.
Wow!
Gobsmacked.
Not quite as good as kit chrome but better than I have ever got with anything else. It looks like polished aluminium which is the look I was after anyway.
I honestly made no effort to get a good shine on the black base coat and probably put the Alclad on too thick (maybe lower pressure next time?) but even with minimal effort it looks great.

Call me a convert.

And no Bryce, no pics yet...
Very Happy

TOLD YA SO!

tease

useless

lol!

FWIW - in my experience you can't really put Alclad on too thick. It just takes a bit longer to shine up and varies the level of 'depth'. The less paint the more reflective, but also less chrome like, more like polished metal...does any of that make sense...? dunno

I'm always ready to admit when i'm wrong.
It's just that it doesn't happen often tease lol!

I think I get where you're coming from. Instructions say thin coats thats all.

The smoother and shinier the Gloss base the better, I've also heard some good results from using Dark blue base as well..........and from my experience with it, just a few passes with the airbrush and that's it as it's not really designed for multiple coats.

Alclad is the bomb! I love it! I have found the shinier and smoother the black base coat the better. Less is definately more when you apply it.

I have a roll cage, some bumpers and an exhaust to do so there is scope for some experimentation there.
