Hurst Hairy Olds
I knew what I was in for when I bought this but man, it was still a disappointment. If this was a full detail kit it would have been awesome.
Anyhoo, i've been plugging away detail painting and here's where I am at.
This is absolutely box stock. I haven't even wired the engines (because you won't be able to see them anyway).
And here's the body. That's polished gold enamel (looks like slightly tarnished brass in the flesh - not a bad effect!). I'm going to clear it (to protect the gold from the masking tape) and then put the black over the clear, then decals and then more clear.

Re: Hurst Hairy Olds
Thanks guys.
No point in wiring the engines Kane as the bonnet is moulded in place so the wiring will never be seen.

Thanks folks.
Tezza - looking at those pics again just highlights how much work would be needed to make an accurate replica. Definately sticking to Box stock for once.

Re: Hurst Hairy Olds
Looking great so far Fred!
I was disppointed when I bought the kit in the early '70s. It's very basic. It does look pretty good when it's finished though.
If you ever decide to do a fully detailed version, though an earlier version, there was a full colour article in one of the old Hot Rod magazines that had pics of the car with the bodyshell off. I plan on doing it one day if I can.
The AMT kit is an excellent starting point, then you need 2 Johan Toronado engines, front suspension and driveline parts, and a lot of scratching. IIRC Fred Cady did the decals in 1/25.
Chris.

Re: Hurst Hairy Olds
Yes Chris, the thought has crossed my mind but the sticking point would be getting hold of the 2 Johan Toronados (3 actually, as i'd want to build one stockish as well).
Ross Gibson are you listening? Get mastering. i'm sure you'd sell these in the 2s or 3s...

Re: Hurst Hairy Olds
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
F#*#**@ #$%%@$#@$%!
Got the black on. Decaled it. Left it for the decals to thoroughly dry. 2 mist coats of clear so as to sneak up on the decals. And then the first wet coat of clear.
Which has crazed like buggery. But on the black rather than on the decals.
Strip & repaint? Nah. No more decals and i've already stripped this once (it came to me from evil-bay with an acceptable coat of gold but with mould separation lines still in place).
I'm going to try gently sanding back the crazing to expose the gold below and then re-clear to make a feature of it.
Wish me luck.

Re: Hurst Hairy Olds
What a throw back....nice work so far but shame to hear of the paint issues. I have had this a few times and what a set back. Good luck with the save.
