WRECK-scued 59' Impala Empty WRECK-scue REbuilds

Post by DeeCee Tue 20 Nov 2012, 7:33 pm

OK, I'll kick this one off, Deans idea of rebuilding a wreck, pull out a wreck, show us what your going to rebuild, lots of pics too please, BEFORE, DURING and AFTER. All the nitty gritty processes etc you go through to rescue a loved model.
I'll start with a 59 Impala, painted white, missing windows,( fell out) and an attempt at an all alloy race interior, which was only half done.
I'm going very low, maybe channel the chassis a bit to achieve the lowness i want, and maybe some more stripey paint and patterns, a new interior as most of the bits are missing or been severely modified.(sanded smooth).
What it should have looked like.
WRECK-scued 59' Impala Wreck-10
Spiffy race interior.
WRECK-scued 59' Impala Wreck-11
The underside.
WRECK-scued 59' Impala Wreck-12
The beast! (sorry, already started stripping the interior)
WRECK-scued 59' Impala Wreck-13

OK, don't be shy, we can all see up the TOP OF THE PAGE, just how good a job somebody can do on a rebuild.(VERY well done Fred), now show us what your gonna pull apart, and a brief idea of where you would like it to go, build wise. NO judging , NO time limits,
just a bit of FUN, with an old kit. Here's your chance Dean, get em out mate. Laughing

That's a funky interior you had there mate, but I'm sure this old bomb will come out a beast the other end...... popcorn

I really get a kick out of this sort of build. It's one thing to build up a fresh shiny new kit but to strip, fix and rebuild and old kit is much like restoring a car and to me somewhat more rewarding in the end.
I'd add to this thread but I've got the S&M Cuda post going so does that count? And you can count on it that I've got others in the queue for resto too( AMT '68 RoadRunner, JoHan '62 Fury convertible etc etc).

Good to see some interest guys,

slowlylearning wrote:in this thread? or should we make our own? Iv got some I could rebuild-save...

I went with the idea of starting this thread for everybody to use, thinking every one will know there is something going on in it pretty well all the time, but
your more than welcome to start your own if you like mate, your call, the more the merrier. Smile

Personally I'd prefer individual threads for each wreckscue with maybe a pointer here saying you are taking part (like for the GAS community builds) but that's just me - I'm old and set in my ways.

I've got my Monte Carlo sedan delivery ripped apart at the moment for a rework so i'll put that up when I get back to it.
This one.

Maybe a fixed folder called Wreck-scues and then people could start their own threads in there. Paul ??

Im hoping to get some bench time over the next few weeks and I have my eye on this one ...

one of the first after a long break from modelling and I am not happy with the paint so ... to the dungeon with it and onto the slab (Insert evil laugh here)

Well thats the plan. Wait and see. Oh and nice choice Dale ...you know I love the 59 ... im going to be checking for updates every 10 minutes now ...thanks ! Twisted Evil

Nice choice fella's , that monte delivery is a wicked piece of work, would love to see it redone, Dean, welcome back to the bench mate( almost), a GTO will always look grouse to me, why not repaint it, you get to enjoy it all over again. Laughing i'm a bit partial to a rebuild, cant afford a new kit every time, now that Adam is into it aswell. Great idea about a wreck-scue folder too, would work well i reckon.
Got a few bits done, have channeled the chassis, which means ,
Shortening the inner door panels, and modifying the inner guards, front and rear and taking a bit off the fire wall.
WRECK-scued 59' Impala Wrecks10
The rear pillar was broken, so i decided if i've gotta fix it, i might aswell do them both, so i reprofiled the roof a little. lowered it about 2"scale inches. (subtle)
WRECK-scued 59' Impala Wrecks11
also found some old wheel spats and had to mold them on as they were not for this model.
WRECK-scued 59' Impala Wrecks12
And just for MICSMAV, it will sit this low, so there is NO daylight under the sills. Laughing
WRECK-scued 59' Impala Wrecks13

I'm havin' fun with this, next is a fully custom interior.

and found some.

this is where im heading with this, console may be a little high, will look at making it a bit lower when all the glue dries properly.

Looks sweet dale. The console looks awesome, so do the seats, but I cant say i am a fan of the headrests though, a bit too bulky for my liking. with your new roofline, are they going to clear the rear window? just a thought.

Anyway, cool build anyway.

What brand and type of Bog do you use on your model to fill the gap on wheel spats that you added?

Igotta agree with you Andrew, after looking at the pics today, they are a bit to bulky and might not clear the rear window, will also look poxy back on if the headrests take over, so to speak. So i reckon i will remove them and mold the rear seats into the parcel shelf with just a hint of a head rest. Thanks for the input fella's, sometimes we all need that little bit of help from an extra set of eyes. and for "OZBIMMER" mate, I have a tin of K&H spray putty, NOT a spray can but the bulk tin, i brush it on instead of spraying, sometimes it takes a couple of goes to fill a reasonable gap, it does need a bit of time to harden right through, with a big gap, i use humbrol model white putty, it also needs a bit of time to cure, especially if its on the body where you will see sink back. Super glue with some sanding residue, be it plastic or bog, is also great for bodywork filler, less chance of sink back.
Thanks

Yes mate, sometimes it is a great filler, like for instance, if you have a join in a panel, like maybe a roof chop/section job, super glue mixed with some plastic sanding dust,( just sand some plastic and collect the dust in something), will give you strength and will fill a gap with NO sink back.

I always keep some talcum powder handy. I used to use talc and resin when I ran my R/C boat for body fill. Most glues mixed with talc makes a great filler and its nice an fine so makes sanding easier.

A little bit of an update, got some minor bench time through the week, played with the interior. Cut down all the seats, and molded the rears to the parcel shelf, also did the same with the console.
Added some plastic to the door linings to give them some style, a little bit more to do yet, need to make some arm rests yet.

Lots of work to go yet, fine tune the interior, also strengthening the rear pillars, broke the bastards a dozen times already.
