1975 Buick Skyhawk
This is my entry for the 2014 Scale Cannonball Run. This is a community build on the Model Cars Magazine forum.
This year the rule was it had to be a pre '79 car but running gear was open.
i've built a '75 Buick Skyhawk with a blown Small Block Chevy.
Body is from a Doyusha Nostalgic Heroes kit which had the usual crap chassis and interior designed to have an electric motor with batteries under the floor.
Instead of the supplied garbage I used pretty much all of a Monogram '91 Firebird. The only mods I had to do to make it fit was to lengthen the interior by 6 mm in the boot (hidden under the fuel cell) and mount the front and rear suspensions slightly further apart.
Oh, and cut out all the Firebirds under bonnet detail and graft it into the Buick body.
The Buick comes with the bonnet and tailgate moulded in place (but hinges are supplied) so after cutting them out it was necessary to replace lost plastic with strips of thin sheet and also build up some structure around the inside of the openings.
I also removed all the badges and sanded off the side trim, filled many sink marks, removed huge mould separation lines and filled bumper mounting recesses.
Tinted windows came as standard which was nice.
The road atlas and doughnut box I printed up myself and the side pipes are scratchbuilt.
Engine is the Monogram kit one with the blower from a Revell pro street corvette.
Wheels and front tyres came with the Firebird and rear tyres are Revellogram unlabelled Goodyear GT Radials from my parts box.
Paint is zero paints red over pearl white with 2 pack clear.
