Allan Moffat RX7
Hi all! I built this 1:24 scale model of Allan Moffat's 1983 Australian Touring Car Championship winning Mazda RX7 many years ago. It was from the Fujimi kerbside kit and the colour scheme is all hand painted. This was a one-off model built for Fujimi's Australian importer/distributor. At that time they had an idea to take 1,000 Fujimi RX7 kits and have special Allan Moffat RX7 decal sheets made up for each kit so they could be sold as exclusive models.
I believe it all fell through when they found out what Moffat wanted in royalties, but it was a good idea anyway. The original model has survived and is still owned by the importer. My hand was much steadier then, and I didn't need magnifying glasses either.

Top build Tezza.
Your not alone bear, i remember this well too. I also remember seeing Moffat rolling end for end his XA hard top at Phillip Island in `73. Very impressive to a 10 year old .

Re: Allan Moffat RX7
I remember seeing this giant-killer race and it made a sound like an angry bee buzzing very loudly, almost ear splitting. But there was no doubt it was fast and agile, as Peter Brock found out on many an occasion when Moffat passed him on impossible corners. I also remember Moffat rolling his Falcon at Phillip Island, only I was twenty years older then than you were Steve - ah what great memories.
Below - Moffat passes under Brock at the end of Sandown's long straight in the 1983 Castrol 500. Both drivers were absolutely professional and never touched or banged into each other. Brock had almost passed Moffat on the straight, but Moffat went in deeper under brakes and was able to pull off this move.

Al and Brocky were best of mates, but when they raced, they raced for keeps and it was always take no prisoners.

Re: Allan Moffat RX7
It's only 23 years too late Bryce, but thanks for showing me anyway. I wonder if you can still buy a plastic model kit of the RX7? I would like to build another one and not have to hand-paint it this time around. Look closely at the Sandown pic to see who got the numbers wrong. This is the real car at Bowden's.

You reckon your eyes are bad? I can't read the numbers in that pic!

Re: Allan Moffat RX7
So looks like Patto needs to do better research!
Update - I just found another sheet with the correct numbers. They must have changed at some point - anyone know why? Maybe cigarette packets went from 34 to 43...

Re: Allan Moffat RX7
Yes - but we modellers also need to be vigilant when it comes to purchasing some aftermarket products. You picked up Patto's mistake and I hadn't even noticed it. That's why this forum is so good for everyone. Thankfully it's not much of a fix - just cut out each number and reposition them.

I don't think it was a mistake - see my edited post.

Re: Allan Moffat RX7
That photo would make for a great Diorama Terry , nice work on the model to .
My mentor and good mate Gary Jeffries did a limited number of modified Diecasts one of them was the JPS Jim Richards BMW he also made a series of Add on components to suit the old Fujimi Skyline kits to modify them to look like the old Tourers you older Guys may remember the stuff it was all labelled as Auscar models ?
I ended up inheriting all of the left over parts, Decals and packaging and still have them in my possession . theres some beautiful stuff here now I've seen this thread I'm going to go through it all and sort it out so I can display it all the way it deserves to be displayed.

Re: Allan Moffat RX7
Yes Sean I remember the AUSCAR series. I have previously posted a photo of my JPS BMW elsewhere in this topic if you want to look at it. It was built and modified from the Monogram kit.

Hi all,
I'd like to cook up one of these rice burners. Is anyone able to advise which Fujimi kit is required as a starting point please ?
Thanks

Re: Allan Moffat RX7
Hey Tony you'll need a Fujimi Mazda Savanna RX7 kit in 1:24 scale. It's the one with the added body styling kit. It's still around though not easy to find. This is what the box looks like...
There may be other RX7's on eBay?
PS - have you looked at your thread on Dick Johnson's Mustang yet?
