Chefor Willison
So, 50's drag car.
Well the rear end is the bit I sliced off of the back of the Nightmare Truck ('51 Chev) so that's the 50's part sorted.
I must admit to cheating a bit as i've already started this.
But all i've done is roughed out the body and glued the engine blocks together and painted them (twice in the case of the RH engine).
The idea is an exhibition car powered by twin Allison V12s.
Body is the '51 rear end, narrowed with a very modified '41 Willy's roof grafted on.
At the front will be '40 Ford front 'guards & nose section.
Both engines will drive through a single powerglide 'box to a funny car rear axle.
Since these pics work on the left hand engine has commenced.
Tell you what, these parts pack engines are buggers to put together as nothing seems to fit right. Not sure if it's due to old moulds or the thickness of the chrome but i seem to have to cut off every mounting pin and/or enlarge every hole.

Re: Chefor Willison
Thanks Paul.
When you built your Allison powered rod did you do any research on where the coolant hoses connect?
Or did you guess (after all who's going to know)?

Re: Chefor Willison
These engines are a pig to build.
Here's where i'm at on the LH engine (I know it's the LH one - By-Tor - as it's black).
The RH one (The Snow Dog) is white but isn't much more than a bare block ATM.

Re: Chefor Willison
The last link is a mine of information.
They photographed the assembly of an engine as it was put together for a boat.
Lot's of detail and information.
For a start AMT appear to have neglected to include the cam drives which I think should run up the front of each cylinder bank.

Re: Chefor Willison
Due to nagging by Allan (thanks mate - you made me get it out and think through some problems I was having with engine mounting) the ball is rolling with this one again.
Not for GAS #7 though - I built Thunderchild instead.
Paul - can you move this to the workshop area please and remove "GAS 7" from the title?
Thanks.
I've built both engines (second one went together easier than the first), made a start modifying a Funny Car chassis to suit and have sanded back the filler thats been on the body for about 6 months.
The '40 Ford front bodywork idea has been shelved (got other plans for that).
Wheels and tyres will be Funny Car slicks & skinnies from The Parts Box.
More pics soon.

Yertis
Also, lurking in the background there is the solution to "what to do with all those left over Revell Ford 5 litre motors". It's a Broad arrow 12...

Looks cool , each time I'm at scale automobilia I look at a 1:24 resin Merlin engine kit there and wonder what it could go in , you're giving me ideas now ...

Re: Chefor Willison
That is sensational - how you gonna keep it straight on the strip? The torque from those Allisons will probably barrelroll the car over...
...great work so far!

Re: Chefor Willison
Thanks folks.
It's more an exercise in engineering than modelling. Everything has to be thought through as i'm making it up as I go and not basing it on anything (although if I get stuck I could probably find pics of twin engined tractor pulllers for inspiration).
I've added an engine cradle slung under the funny car chassis and i'm in the process of bracing it. Next is to extend the frame to mount a TPB Resin dropped tube front axle. Then I have to find somewhere to mount the radiators.

Re: Chefor Willison
What a machine!!
Can this be built as a 1:1 or is it more fantasy? I'd love to see something like this roar down the strip. I'm guessing the sound would break windows!

Re: Chefor Willison
I always try to build stuff that couild work IRL.
I've seen Tractor pullers with at least 2 Merlin/Packard/Allison V12s.
Of course while what I build COULD work there is always the questions how well? how long for? and who would be stupid enough to drive it?

Re: Chefor Willison
Chassis. Still needs more tubes and gussets.
And 2 mock ups. The big grey thing between the engines & the Powerglide is a transfer case containing (in my head) a 'kin big duplex or triplex chain and sprocket set. Body will sit lower but some idiot put a chassis tube in the way.

zen, you must be a master of symetry, that cage/chassy setup is wicked! oh and are those 3 same-coloured engines all destined for the same build?

Re: Chefor Willison
Symmetry my big fat hairy bum.
Specially chosen camera angle
The centre section is very symmetrical but that's because it's a Revell (probably) funny car chassis.
The rest is OK by eye but please don't take a ruler to it.
The 4 (one's just out of shot) pontiac engines moulded in metallic blue are from the Revell Micky Thompsons Challenger 1 kit. I couldn't resist starting it.
