Then you haven't been looking in the right place Tezza.
http://www.ratbike.org/
Rat Bikes predate rat rods and are a distinct breed with their own proud heritage and sub-species. Unlike so called rat rods which are a caricature of something that only existed fleetingly out of neccesity and lack of funds.
And Andy's Hardly, while a nice build, is not a Rat Bike. It takes more than a coat of black paint to make a Rat.
Sorry. Pet subject. Blame Hammozed as he dragged this up out of the dim mists of antiquity.

"It takes more than a coat of black paint to make a Rat."
my Zed thou never looked as good as it does now, when it was daily transport the matt black paint was entirely lack of funds related.
after spending lotsa bucks on the mechanicals, all we used to be able to afford was a rattle can of matt black from the hardware shop.
a repaint every 3 or 4 months was usually the go. spend the rest on beer, petrol and the occasional model
the beauty of the cheap paint job, didnt have to worry parking anywhere, the bike would always be where you left it and if it was scratched.... oh well - the next paint job will fix it
and to be entirely correct a rat bike depends heavily on the rider being a bit rodent like
Mmmmmmmmmm i think there is a pattern forming here.. i wondered about the name

Re: Harley Davidson
Rattle can of matt black?
That's a bit posh isn't it?
What's wrong with a tin of blackboard paint and a cheap 2" brush?
I've never had a matt black bike. Too run of the mill
After all, coloured paint can be got as cheap as black. If it's left overs it's free.
The side covers on this were painted with gloss left over from the kitchen and I had another set done in light blue emulsion (spare bedroom walls).
This was a posh job. British Racing Green Japlac enamel brushed on carefully along with sprayed satin black, home made & covered seat and suede fork /shock gaiters & grips. Awarded Best Rat at a rally one wet summer.
It later got brushed on soft sheen vinyl emulsion touches.
And this is a combination of sprayed orange and hand brushed tiger stripes. This paint job (or probably more likely the oil leaks and soft drink can as an overflow wired to the frame) won it Concours De Grot.
Zenrat came from my pet rat who was called Zen. It was in memory of him after he was foully done in by a ginger haired vet...

Re: Harley Davidson
As far as I know he's still practising.
And one day he might get it right.
Boom tish!
He recommended an operation to remove a lump which wasn't bothering Zen but was slowly getting bigger (size of a split pea at time of removal). He cut out a piece of skin the size of a 10 cent piece and the poor little bugger never really recovered, dying a couple of days later.
Still, i've always got the bite scars to remember him by...
