Re: 1936 BMW 328 custom roadster
how did you get the styrene to conform to the guard profile.
i have tried warm water ,bending & gluing as you go,but nothing seems to be working for me.
any ideas.

That's wicked Torgny - I was expecting to see the original classic car but am pleasantly surprised by your customised version. Looks something like the current "Morgan Aero Super Sports" only better.

Just bending and gluing, that´s it .But you got to hold it steady until the glue dried, With your hands, its really difficult to put clamps and get it right. Time feels veeeery long when you wait for the glue to dries. Here on the forum i can´t say all the words that i told the car when i was doing the gluing...........John ,just keep on trying.

Re: 1936 BMW 328 custom roadster
That is great. Good work.
To get styrene sheet to stay curved i've had some luck taping it to a piece of steel tube (IIRC I used motorcycle handle bars) with insulating tape and leaving it for a couple of weeks. It will spring open a bit on removal of the tape but does retain a nice constant curve. That would have worked on the rear 'guards but as for the fronts...

Re: 1936 BMW 328 custom roadster
I've found that styrene sheet and strips have a grain, like metal. If you remember back to your days of metal work at school, making the metal funnel or toasting iron, you needed to break the grain so the metal didn't get kinks in it.. With sheet or strips of styrene I hold each end, lay it flat on my bench then pull it towards the edge, the end that is over the edge then gets pulled down towards the floor, so you are going at right angles, keep doing this and you will feel it get more workable and it tends to keep it's shape easier. If anyone want some pics I can organise something. It would also work over a pipe in a vise. Hope this makes sense.

I'll see what I can do. Packing up at the moment, moving into my new house in a couple of weeks. If you don't see anything on it in the next little while send me a PM to remind me.

I do similar. I drag the piece of sheet I want to curve over the edge of a metal ruler. It's like when you used to make strips of paper go curly when doing arts & crafts at primary school (or was that only me?).
