Re: TORANA GTR-X
Im not sure im glad they didnt send it into production. If they had, other manufacturers would have had to step up the game. It was very light and nimble and very ahead of its time in a technology for Australian motoring. Imagine where Australian manufacturers would be today if this was what they had to compete with! It would have been a whole new ball game!

Re: TORANA GTR-X
I heard that the ones selling europen cars made a lot of noise about Holden selling the GTR-X for a lot less then the europen cars they said it would hurt them to much,The GTR-X was all fibreglass like the corvette so the plug was pulled on it,Holden sould remake it.

Re: TORANA GTR-X
I was working at the General's Fishermans Bend plant back then. The GTR-X was a concept car fibreglass styling exercise for Holden. As I recall it was shown to selected members of the public who received it enthusiastically and said they would buy one if reasonabley priced. Unfortunately the American HQ of GM vetoed the whole thing , supposedly because they didn't want any competition to the Corvette.
This website has the story and you can download a copy of the GTR-X pre-release brochure in PDF format there.

There was also the Holden Hurricane concept car that was only that - a concept car whereas the GTR-X came very close to production.
More on the Hurricane here http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/car_info_holden_hurricane.htm

Re: TORANA GTR-X
Oh Boy, You've touched on one of my favourite subjects. I really hoped at the time that it would have gone into production as I was standing beside it at the 1970 Sydney Motor Show. I have photo's of it then with myself (young person)in the background, and I also obtained a sales brochure of which I still have. I also have the 'Model56' diecast model as well, plus a number of magazine article relating to the GTR-X. It still looks as stunning now as it did in 1970. Nothing wrong with bragging about this as it is so unique it is worth talking about.

Re: TORANA GTR-X
Stay tuned to Biante and Classic Carlectables websites because one of them (possibly CC) has a diecast GTR-X on their future plans in 1:18 scale.

Re: TORANA GTR-X
Tezza , I thought I saw something in a magazine that reffered to 1/18 scale version of this , but could not find it , so I figured it must have been a mistake or I dreamt it up!
