The Faux Par – ’57 Ford Kustom
Long time no building for me but I finally got this one finished...
This build was inspired by Johnny Taylor’s ’58 Ford kustom. I saw it in the 50 Years of Rod and Kustom book and was quite taken with its timeless appeal. I had to build something similar but being as ’58 kits are less than readily available I grabbed an old AMT ’57 and started cutting. The headlight pods and front bumper are ’57 Chrysler as are the seats – narrowed to fit. The rear has frenched ’65 T-bird taillights and a recessed stock ’57 bumper. I added simplified Ranchero-style side trim and the iconic double lakes pipes to complete the look.

Sensational build and intricacy, but what else would we expect from you Bryce. Love the paint especially the roof effect. Looks absolutely right all round. Deserves top spot IMO.

And once again Bryce has created another masterpiece.
What paint did you use on this one?

Thanks Kane. The paint was a lot of trial and error. The body started as a wild violet acrylic lacquer with a flip-flop purple nail polish on top but unfortunately the panels ended up different colours so I had to top coat it with a Pactra polycarbonate purple pearl I have had sitting in my stash for years and years. The roof is a translucent purple nail polish top coated with silver metallic acrylic lacquer and then heavy clear to bring the purple through the silver for a flake effect. Another trick I learnt by stuffing up on a previous car. My new airbrush has allowed me to try some new techniques and nail polish has some great colours...thanks for the interest!
