Daytona Bonneville Racer
Waiting for paint to dry again
Some awesome stuff coming through the workshop posts that have inspired me to do better on my current project. It started out with the MPC Daytona which is probably the worst molding of any kit I have had. Currently grafting a Nascar chassis under it after moving the front arches forward - they look better that way.... like the chopped roof. Power moved up from the kit hemi to a supecharged one, to a turbo, to a big turbo till we threw away the hemi & will use a Pratt & Whitney turbine. The other thing is old leftovers from a B-57 & is as close to a belly tanker as I can get at the moment. Its very basic but a bit of a laugh. Hope they inspire some other weird ideas.
Have a good one

Re: Daytona Bonneville Racer
Brian, That's gonna be killer when done. I only just saw this post today and ironically I was only trolling the net yesterday looking for pics of "Blowfish" the 69 Cuda salt flat racer and found some pics of salt flat Daytonas......got me thinking "Hmmm that would be a good idea for that horrible old MPC Daytona kit sitting on my shelf".
Anyway that chop and stance will look smooth and sleek can't wait to see what you do with this one.
Cheers Tim

Re: Daytona Bonneville Racer
Welcome to the site Tim.
Thanks all for the ecouragement, it helps when you find yourself grinding to a stop at times. The chop took a lot of gazing but was surprisingly simple to do. I just ran a razor saw vertically along the bottom of the C pillar until I got past the back of the rear window then squeezed the pillars together a little till they dropped down (obviosly the A pillars had been cut at their base & bent forward). I then glued them & ground away the excess from underneath to let the rear wheels sit up high. There isn't much filling to do. I also intend to lengthen the tail a bit & sit the wing further back. It will have a full pan underneath too.
Hope it gives you ideas
Brian

Re: Daytona Bonneville Racer
With the Jet racer gone its full time on the Daytona
Lot of cleaning up to do on the chassis yet but i am happy with the way the turbine sits. I wanted to make sure it looked like it was designed to be there. Chassis is a chopped down Nascar unit (thanks Bruce). Only major underbody bit to do is the exhaust & I think I have finally nutted that out. Leaving the body untill I am fully happy with the chassis but sticking with the extended tail though.
Have a good one

Re: Daytona Bonneville Racer
Thanks gentlemen
The turbine is out of the MPC Lotus STP Indy turbine kit, the original one!
Its been floating around in the bottom of an old parts box since the seventies so its probably as old as Silverfox's woody. I always thought it too crude to use but seeing some of the stuff on this site gave me ideas & it detailed up fairly well. Point with a turbine is thay are pretty simple motors with not much shape about them at best. Good fun model though

This is soooooo cool. Love the stance and the chop and I think the pink has to stay too. This will be be a great model when finished.

Re: Daytona Bonneville Racer
Moon caps came from the AMT '25 Model T kit, wheels were from the scrap box, what ever fitted the caps. Rear tyres are the two piece vinyl drag slicks that come in many street rod kits. I put these ones in a drill & sanded the edges off to look like the high speed tyres the salt racers use. Makes a good looking used tyre but I suggest you do it in a small room with not much stuff in it. If you are good you can follow the first couple of bounces off the roof after it spins off the drill, but not much after that, then its on hands & knees amongst the garage junk till you find it.
The moon caps will be spun a little to with some very fine emery & then a coat of satin clear to give that spun aluminium look.

Re: Daytona Bonneville Racer
Bodywork nearly done. First coat of check primer & first time the overall effect of the body mods have come out. A few curves need cleaning up & the leading edge of the bonnet is in for further surgery but other than that its getting close. There is a full undertray in the works that will extend out under the two front fins to form the jet intake & splitter. I was going to put the Daytona wing on the extended tail but it killed the lines for some reason. I reckon the real thing would be a bit over six & a half metres long... not good in parking stations.
Have a good one
