69 Shelby Mustang GT500
After a drink or 2 the other night with Shoey, it was decided that a Shelby build was due to pay a form of respect to a well known man in the muscle car industry. I have decided to build this GT500. It will be basically out of box, might even use the wheels from the kit with maybe a few other small changes.
I remember when I first started working in the exhaust industry (1988 when I was 18), 1 of these (1:1 scale) came in to have some work done on it. It was probably the first Mustang I really looked at back in the early days. Coool!!!

Re: 69 Shelby Mustang GT500
Maybe that could be the next GAS build. We had a tribute to chopper ...how about a tribute Carroll Shelby !
I will be watching this one. Nice choice too.

Re: 69 Shelby Mustang GT500
I'm sure just about everyone has a Shelby or two in their stash.
I agree with you Dean! GAS #15 should be "SHELBY"
Dufasdave and I were lucky to grace his workshop last year, it was Awesome.
I might also have to break open a blue oval box and start building!

Re: 69 Shelby Mustang GT500
Great idea dave , what a way to pay tribute to to a great legend, and i will be following your lead with a kit that has been waiting in the darkness for such an occasion and will be a great excuse to build out of box for a change and it will also be right for the qmhe club display.Let the tributes begin!

Re: 69 Shelby Mustang GT500
It could fit in with what we are doing Scotty as part of our display. There will be a carpark show and shine, the Shelby club could be a feature. I know Rocket has his pink girly Cobra already done, I think I may have a part done Cobra somewhere that I started about 20 years ago.

Re: 69 Shelby Mustang GT500
MMMMM....yellow plastic. Thought of painting it black so as not to worry about bleed through but thats not definate. Got a few colours in mind, but definately not white.
It will be done before QMHE if we are going to put a heap of Shelby's in the car park, thats if I don't put it in the comp.

Re: 69 Shelby Mustang GT500
Red or orange would be good over the yellow, brighten it up a bit, apparently an old paintes trick.
May just have to build another Shelby for the display.

Re: 69 Shelby Mustang GT500
Have got some of this car done. It nearly went for flying chuck over the fence though. First paint job I put fingerprints on the guards while masking off the engine bay, that shit me. So took all the paint off and sprayed again. This time the paint has cracked on the sides, roof and tops of the guards. Look out neighbours as there could be a piece of airbourne plastic heading over. Will strip it again and have another go. Not sure why the paint cracked but have a couple of ideas, paint reacted with the stuff I cleaned the previous paint with. After stripping the paint I did clean the body with soap and water, rinse and resand. OR the paint reacted with the clear coat. Green paint is Gunze emerald green with Tamiya spray can clear.

Re: 69 Shelby Mustang GT500
That's a shame about the paint. Otherwise, it's looking like a top model

I like the colour Dave. I dont mind these old school pastels on older cars. Should be a nice contrast with the off white interior too. What paint did you use for the interior by the way if you dont mind me asking.
I look forward to seeing it done.

Back into this one, interior was painted semi gloss black and Model Master Light Ivory. The wood grain is various browns, yellow and black all dry brushed to give timber grain effect.
This week managed to clean old stuffed paint off and respray. Have come up with possible answer as to why previous paint cracked. Previously I thinned the Gunze Sangyo paint with Tamiya thinners. This may have reacted and caused the cracked effect. Nice if I wanted old cracked paint for weathered car NOT for nice gloss look. This time I cleaned off old paint, scrubbed with detergent/water, rinsed and wet sanded. Thanks to Beno, thinned paint with Gunze thinner and sprayed like there was no tomorrow. Gave it a light polish today and this is what we have. Quite happy with the paint work now.
I think this paint is very soft so wont be touching this one for at least 1 -2 weeks so I don't stuff it up again. It yet has to have a black highlight across taillight panel and black engine bay, foil the chrome work. Interior is almost done now that my interest is back into it. Probably not one of my best interiors but its not bad.
