66 Fairlane chop top
Ok my first attempt at a top chop. This old body took a whack somewhere and the front screen pillars and 1/4 window pillars snapped so I have been using it for a paint mule for a while now. Its had more coats of paint than the Sydney harbor bridge I think.
Anyway I found the box the other day and realized it was still complete so I thought (I have to stop doing that) Hmmmm lets build it. So the chassis and engine are done .....
So too the body ....off with the roof and cut into 4. Remove the unwanted bits .....
and put it all back on!
Lower the suspension on the chassis and pop the body back on to check
Now lots of filling and sanding. Does the stance look OK. I dont want it too low. Should I put the 1/4 windows back in or leave it with a pillarless look.
Anyways back too it ...lots to do. Thanks for looking.

I like the pillarless look and I think the profile looks awesome, will be great to see when it is finished.

Re: 66 Fairlane chop top
Looks too thick in the body for the chop. A little out of proportion for me.

Fair call. I thought so too but im hoping a coat of paint and some chrome might thin it down. Not too fussed if it doesn't as it was either a top chop or the bin.
Lets see what happens with some paint. Thanks for the thought!
Re: 66 Fairlane chop top
Looks damn good to me Dean. I think leave it pillarless, it's just that little bit meaner

If the chop top does not work out you could always turn it into a rag top

Re: 66 Fairlane chop top
Nice job on that chop Dean, definately leave the vent windows out, looks a lot nicer with 'em gone. Kinda looked goofy with 'em in. -They came too far back on the door.

Re: 66 Fairlane chop top
No quarterlights, and drop the front more (or raise the rear) for that bad arse 70's street racer look.

Sort of thought drop the front a bit more myself but I will wait till I get some paint on it . I have found the paint lines can change the stance just a little sometimes so if I ever get this sanding finished I will throw on some paint and see what happens. Looks like pillarless is the go !
Re: 66 Fairlane chop top
Hi Dean
I think the chopped roof looks pretty cool with the boxy body of the Fairlane.
I have an AMT F-100 from the movie Expendables under construction, which is the first chop-job for me, too. As far as I can evaluate, you have to keep an eye on your filled areas. After I have finished the cab, I laid it on the shelf to cure. Guess what happened...ghost lines appeared. It has cured for about 6 weeks and I´ll give it another 2 and a half months to set before going on with the build. You may want to consider that to get a perfect result on your roof.
I used 2-component filler, which I think is better than common modeling filler. It cures from hardener and not from evaporisation (this causes even more shrinking and sinking).
Looking forward to see your progress on this one.
Cheers
Kevin

Re: 66 Fairlane chop top
Yea Kevin I have thought of the ghosting ...and it did with the first coat of primer. Still more sanding and shaping to do then I thought I would mix up some casting resin and put a light coat over the whole roof. Then a good sanding and hopefully that should seal the roof enough to stop ghosting. I will give it a go anyway.
Thanks for the feedback. Are you going to post some pics of the effie ....or keep us guessing hehehe !

Re: 66 Fairlane chop top
Yes, I´ll do a little build log of the F100 when I get really into it. Right now I´m searching for parts and doing preparatory work. It may take a while but it will come.
