Generation 1 Optimus Prime
I should be finishing off other builds but I"ve started this AMT White Freightliner cab over and turning it into The Gen 1 Optimus Prime. Based mainly on the cartoon, but with very limited detail I'm useing the toy as well.
This kit is rubbish, but what other choice do I have. You'll love this lit if you LOVE mold lines. Could've built this kit a lot quicker if I didn't have to spend 90% of construction time cleaning up parts. I know it's an old kit, but they could have retooled more of the sprues before re releasing it. Also, none of the parts are numbered on the sprue. I'm in the process of removing chrome from some of the parts that will need alclad from where I nipped them off the sprue. I sprayed the Chasis and engine etc with blue but it's not dark enough, and I will respray this in the coming days. Here's a few pics.
I am enjoying watching the Box Sets of Tranformers I have for reference
Here's My Gen1 Bubblebee I did last year

Re: Generation 1 Optimus Prime
Yer , it takes most of your time with that cab which was made to fit two models .
Re: Generation 1 Optimus Prime
Looking good.
IMO the blue is spot on for the sort of blue cheap plastic toys would have been moulded in...

Re: Generation 1 Optimus Prime
The original Gen 1 Optimus toy was half & half, metal and plastic. So much better than toys made today.
But yeah, I'm in 2 minds now what colour to go with, for the blue. I'll have to go down to Toyworld and have a look at the paint rack and see what looks the best.

Optimus Update
Here's where I'm up to. A bit of painting done (redone the chasis), bit of Alclad chrome done with lots more to come and I, for the 1st time in a long time, managed to stuff the clear parts up . I wanted the windscreen and windows to have a blue tint to them but buggered it up with the airbrush, went to strip it off with metho and do it again, just like I've done a couple of times before with no dramas. And the plastic started to get soft, just like a Butter Menthol feels, and put finger prints all over the bloody thing. Sanded the hell out of it to get it to some sort of level where I could maybe use it but don't know whether to just put a whole new one in made from clear plastic yet

Re: Generation 1 Optimus Prime
Yeah I found that build too, thanks for the decal link. Just a pity they aren't in red and purple. Already have the Autobot symbol for my build, could be useful for other builds but.

done a bit more on this
I havent been on here for some time, but I've been getting back into this one again the last couple of weeks. It did spend some time on the shelf of doom, but 'm going to finish it, or I'm going to throw it at the wall. What a rubbish kit! AMT should be ashamed of themselves re releasing this without any new tooling. The kit is not worth 10 bucks let alone the $80 I paid for it. Lucky it was Optimus, if it was just a truck, it would have been smashed a long time ago.
Still adding chrome, and respraying chrome, got a few parts to add yet as well. It's fought me every step of the way but hopefully I'm not far from completion. It is no show winner that's for sure, but I just want it done.
