Low Rider
I recently brought in some kits from Japan including this little Low Rider diorama kit. Could be a fun build. Who would have thought ..... 3 different ways you can build it - just like some of the car kits.
Made a start tonight which did not go so well. Different parts are used depending which build option you choose. The instruction sheets appear to be quite clear for those who can read Japanese.
It is only a toilet - What could possibly go wrong ?

Re: Low Rider
I'm having trouble getting my head around how someone actually managed to make this sales pitch work!? The man is obviously worth his money, probably sells ice to Eskimos. An item for dolls houses?

This is 1/12 scale which is the most common scale for dolls houses but this is a Diorama with base and 2 walls so that was not its intended use. I don't expect this would be a big seller. Aoshima - a large Japanese kit maker has some involvement in this kit.

One of my main modelling interests now is weathering techniques. I have seen pictures of several woman miniaturists amazing weathered bathrooms / toilets that they have scratchbuilt. I saw this kit and thought I might have a go at weathering it. As it is a small kitset it should not be a lot of work to assemble. Once assembled I can let loose with some weathering products I have recently brought and see what sort of results can be achieved. So I am experimenting a little. As this forum is Automotive based this probably should not be here. The moderators are welcome to remove it if they wish. If the post is still here when I complete the project I will put up a picture of it finished.

Re: Low Rider
No. Keep it here. It's fascinating.
My thought was that there was a market for these because there were enough people who would model them with 1/12 school girls squatting over them.
So, weathering. Stained, soiled, vandalised and graffittied? Cracked tiles? Scratchbuilt franger machine? Pineapple chunks and soggy dog ends?

Re: Low Rider
Ok that answers my question, Would not have thought about that for a idea on weathering.

Zenrat - you pretty much have it figured except you have not mentioned the broken mirror mounted on the wall. This is going to be reasonably derelect.

Re: Low Rider
After the undercoat and a flat white base colour, I have added another 9 layers / coats and now am close to getting the look I was after. Things are starting to look reasonably unpleasant here. Next is to assemble and paint the pan and tank.

That is just superb, hate to see what you put in the bottom of the toilet though.

Re: Low Rider
Thanks DeeCee, Allan and Zenrat. Things should deteriorate further once I get the plumbing installed. Must confess I am enjoying weathering this one.

You will not see a dirty toilet anywhere in Japan, so that one must be somewhere in Oz.

Re: Low Rider
Have completed most of the weathering now. This is just a mock up but I am close to gluing the main components in place. Still have quite a few little details to work on. Will have this finished soon and can get back to working on something with wheels.

Re: Low Rider
Smell it? on a hot day you'd nearly taste it! Unfortunately I think we've all experienced something like it. This is really good work!

They ARE the real thing. I spent a couple of hours cutting and sanding lengths of styrene tube that I planned to paint up. Mrs k1w1 walks in and said why don't you tear a toilet roll apart and make them from that - Never crossed my mind........possibly I should lay off her with the Blonde jokes in future. Toilet rolls are made in layers so I peeled off a layer and cut it into strips then wound it around a tube and glued it. Great as doing it this way there is no need to paint them.
Thanks DeeCee and Blat - I think I may have overdone the green a bit. Should have been more of the darker colours, though the greens were fun to work with. AK Slimey Green Dark and Slimey Green Light
