Making molds for bodies etc? Empty Making molds for bodies etc?

Post by Morrie Sun 26 Jun 2016, 9:20 pm

I'm at the stage that I now have a lot of spare parts or can build chassis etc for Hot rod/ rat rods etc. but cant build the actual bodies

I want to try moulding a couple of different bodies so I can build as many as I want without having to buy a new kit every time and using mainly just the body and grill.

So the questions to the experienced Moulders are, what is the cheapest option for materials that I can use with good results? Brands etc.

where to get them from?

I have made some moulds before of engine parts etc, but was kid of hit and miss with  how good they come out as far as air bubbles etc. and wasted a lot of latex or what ever it was, the mould compound I use was kinda thick and pink, I think it was too thick for good results and detail.

This is the brand.

is it going to be worth the effort and cash or should I just continue on the manotinous cheap kit hunting?

I use a product called ultrasill made by barnes bros, dunno where u would find it in Newcastle it costs about $80 for 1 kg, I use about 2kg to make a body, barnes make a whole lot of different types of rubber and resin, may be best if u take a look at their product range to see which products suit u best, some cure faster than others etc

I'm with John, Barnes products. I use both Pinkysil and Ultrasil. For resin I use Procast, some use easycast but for thin stuff I find Procast better. Have a look on Youtube, there are plenty of clips on how to do 2 part moulds. It is expensive if you stuff it up so take your time. Casting is reasonably cheap but there is a technique which you will have to learn through trial and error.
