G'day there Jim... the Rustoleum is like a Polyurethane Enamel, where as the Anchor paint is a Laquer.
Therefore I will finish off with a Polyurethane Enamel Clear coat. If you don't have these brands, I'm sure you will have similar products in the U.S.

Re: '57 FORD Hardtop
Got back to tackling this '57, but decided to go for "rolled front and rear pans" rather than attaching big chrome bumpers.
Bit more puttying and sanding to be done... and "frenching" in rear number plate cavity.
A bit of work on the interior, custom console, carpeting and orange "gearstick knob" (from a dressmakers pin).

Re: '57 FORD Hardtop
I hate it when that happens.
Paint compatibility?
Seems you had it all working fine in the picture....when did the crinkling start? With the clear coat?
I had tried Dupicolor spray paints from Advance Auto once in a multi color project....really nice color selections...when I pulled the masking tape lines off...it pulled all the under lying layers off and then it all started flaking off.
Painting is where my projects usually go south as they say....and why most of my current projects are in a holding pattern until I get a spray booth or nice weather outside.
We got three cats in the house and the hair/fur is everywhere, along with airborne dust.
I like Tamiya in rattle cans as they apply nice, flow well and lay flat and dry quick before the dust finds its way to them.
I warm and shake the cans under hot running water to improve the flow.
Testors lacquer is pretty good ......but I've had micro bubbling along seams and ridges where the paint collects so I need to figure that out.
I'm trying Tamiya bottle paints in my airbrush next.

Re: '57 FORD Hardtop
Thanks guys... no matter what brand of rattle can paint I always sit it in a pot of warm water for about 10-15 mins before spraying.
Always seems to spray and flow out nicer.
Now the gold (being a Lacquer) did not react to the clear coat. I used Rustoleum Gloss Clear ( same type and brand of Polyurethane paint
as the Orange coat) , but they certainly did NOT like each other. Maybe the Clear had a higher solvent content than the Orange?... Don't know?.
In future I will paint "Test" panels and experiment before painting the model.
As much as I agree that the Tamiya Paint is easy to use and gives a great finish... you don't get much paint for your dollar, and there have been times when I've been caught short, and had to fork out for another can.
Ahhhhhh... the trials and tribulations of us Modellers....

Re: '57 FORD Hardtop
Bugger !.. I have mostly been using Tamiya acrylics in the 10ml jars through my airbrush. Works well. Have had some issues with varnishes / clears. I have been trying Mission Models clears recently. . Very happy with result but quite an involved process.

Re: '57 FORD Hardtop
Jezza I was really liking that colour combo. Before getting back into the hobby I'd forgotten about the trials of painting. Being a panel beater and spray painter at work I don't mix paint systems on top of one another. I'm now doing the same on the kits after a couple of disasters. I'm air brushing tamiya acrylics on most parts. Larger metal like parts I'm using AK extreme metal. And bodies are painted in ppg automotive with a spray gun because the air brush is a bit to fine to get a wet coat. You also really need good ventilation and a mask.
