VW Mk2 Golf - Rat ride
Hi all, my name is Bryce, I'm a bit of a car nut from Melbourne. I've been making models on and off for a few years now, but have only recently really started to branch out and hone my skills.
This has been a WIP for quite some time, but finished it last month and entered into Modelexpo Kerbside category. Picked up 2nd spot for my troubles
I think the one point I fell down on was that I mounted it to the base, therefore the underside wasn't visible.
Hopefully I'll get a few more completed this year.
Ciao

Welcome Bryce.
Looks good.
The judges need to rethink their definition of a kerbside as in my book it means you don't look underneath.

Models should not be permanently stuck to a base for technical judging purposes because the judges need to see under-chassis detail to check its construction, finish, etc. in order to assess the total points. Often it comes down to a single point that separates first from second so every little bit of help counts. Bryce didn't say look under the bonnet did he, because this is a kerbside model?
I saw this car at Model Expo and thought it brilliant in idea and construction. BTW I did not judge this category. Well done Bryce!

Not saying you're wrong Tezza 'cause after all you're the trained judge, but why would they need to see this in a kerbside? In my book Kerbside means what you'd see if a car was parked at the kerb. I.e top, sides, front, back and however much of the interior you can see through the windows. It shouldn't matter if a kerbside has a full detail painted chassis or if the wheels are stuck on with chewing gum. They should be judged without being picked up.

Re: VW Mk2 Golf - Rat ride
You're quite right Fred - kerbside (or curbside) means exactly as you would see the car parked somewhere in real life. However when it comes to scale models and technical judging, it is necessary to review all aspects of the visible build in order to assess the model fairly and without prejudice.
For example; judging comes down to two kerbside models that are each visibly perfect in construction and finish, and then each model is turned over to check underneath for any faults, in order to separate the winner and second place. One model is painted and detailed underneath and the other is unpainted bare plastic. To which one would you award the win?
All I'm saying is that judges need to see all of a model to make fair and informed honest assessments. Many a time I've judged models glued to a base, and when I looked underneath with a dental mirror (where possible), I've observed gaps and cement marks and even gaping holes that the builder hasn't bothered about because he permanently attached the model to a base. That's OK for home display but not for serious competition.
Model Expo competition rules state that models permanently attached to a base may incur loss of points if underside inspection is restricted, so the entrant is warned.
Kerbside models do need to be inspected all over just like in any other model category, otherwise we (the judges) are not doing full justice to the builder's skills.

Re: VW Mk2 Golf - Rat ride
Thanks for the comments. I'm not disappointed with a 2nd place, as I finished construction exactly how I had it pictured in my head, which I'm happy about.
Hmmm, it seems I have a twin on this forum......

That is what I thought. But do people get confused with the "slammer" class that they ran a while ago in the states I don't know if it still is they could have blacked out windows so no interior and the chassis did not have to be used it was all about the body work and the custom paint is that what people might get mixed up with?
By the way great build would love to be lucky enough to see it in real life it looks like one of those builds that pictures don't do it justice or show all the little details

Re: VW Mk2 Golf - Rat ride
Kynan the model is judged "per-se" or as is presented. If there is no engine or interior detail then the model is judged and marked accordingly but it would be at a disadvantage against a fully detailed model. That's why the Kerbside category exists - to allow those simpler model kits to be built to the best of the builder's skills and still be recognised and accepted as true models in their own right.
