PICS Model Expo 2011
Here's some first day car pics from Model Expo. Saturday saw a huge crowd attendance - lots of models and heavy trading going on. There is one trader who has a few older van kits there too. I'll get his details and post them later. The big Swap & Sell is tomorrow morning (Monday) from 10am. Our AMCC display has attracted a lot of attention and I'm sure we'll have more forum members soon.
The Expo continues today (Sunday) and tomorrow so pop down and take a peek if you can. As always I try to end on a high note, so the last pic is my choice for overall winner!
These F1 cars are all made from paper/card:
So is this motorbike:
This was brought in to show us - an old AMT promo Valiant. Wonderful stuff!
And the end pic:
More later!

Re: PICS Model Expo 2011
One less van kit now I picked up a '76 Dodge van sans decals but he also had a Ford. All his car kits were from a deceased estate.
This one dealer had a lot of the kits I built as a kid. Monogram El Camino with camper, Monogram Ramcharger (couldn't resist that as it's the first time i've seem one anywhere) and MPC Ford EXP among them.
One observation about Expo - the lighting sucks. If they are going to continue to hold it at Sandown then they need to bring in some portable floodlights so we can actually see what is on the tables.
There was the usual seemingly random allocation of builds amongst the car classes and a bewildering array of different classes for aircraft - I'm pretty sure military propeller driven single seat fighters beginning with S and painted green had their own class although I may have been hallucinating by then due to a combination of eye strain and backache.
My favourite thing on display was this diorama of downtown Frankston on a Friday Night.

Re: PICS Model Expo 2011
Tezza, your flash photography does not do the paintjob on this one any justice.
In fact it does rather an injustice, it's incredible.
Good show, lots of variety, shame the car guys choose not to participate, but having had the judging exlained to me today I think I can understand why that is.
I'm with you on that dio Zenrat, bloody incredible, should be given a special prize for best model of show. The level of detail and accuracy is unbelieveable, certainly makes me think twice about the level of paitience required to build a car model.

Re: PICS Model Expo 2011
I also feel this should have won something - maybe a sense of humour is not a requirement when judging the Sci Fi section?
Is it me or does that look like the chick from "Bones" riding pillion?

Re: PICS Model Expo 2011
Fred, unfortunately Model Expo has no competition category for "sense of humour" models. But this is the model that was judged as best in the Sci-Fi category:
I too thought the "Endor Choppers" model was very clever and deserved a better fate, but I wasn't the judge in that category. BTW I thought you were being a little kind about the picture of "Frankston" on a Friday night. I would have said EVERY night! The diorama won Best in Show.
Maybe the chick does resemble Emily Deschanel from Bones?
Carps the Ford pickup photo taken with flash is also reflecting highlights from the ceiling lighting. It isn't the best angle for sure, so here's another shot of it without the flash:
It looks much better in this pic. The paint finish was superb, but it had two runs on the front panel, and the door grooves and bonnet edges were thinner and showed the original plastic colour through the paint. It had glue on the windscreen and the tray assembly was misaligned to the cab. Otherwise it was a neat little build.

Re: PICS Model Expo 2011
I can see the door edge plastic where the paint thinned out . Would have been avoided with a light coat of matt white , so that that the colour would have had something to grab onto.
The gloss finish is awesome ! Is it a spray can enamel sprayed on dangerously wet?? I,ve tried it with White Knight enamel spray and its easy to load up the paint too much = paint run.
Cheers Ron

I spoke to a chap who built another entry in the same category, and he is a friend of the builder. He told me it was clear gloss acrylic sprayed over the thin paint colour. As far as he knew it was not polished afterwards.

Re: PICS Model Expo 2011
It's true the camera doesn't lie, but to the nekkid eye under the existing light, that paint job looked pretty good.Tezza wrote:Carps the Ford pickup photo taken with flash is also reflecting highlights from the ceiling lighting. I didn't notice the glue on the windscreen, but then I often overlook the simple things and stuff that 'happens'.
As for the cab alignment, that may be an issue with this kit, as I had the same problem with the red one I just finished everything just clicked in place and seemed perfect but despite the floor being flush with both chassis rails and the interior tub perfectly aligned to the windos etc, it's still crooked.

zenrat wrote:Did you judge Tezza?
Yes Fred I judged six car and motorbike categories before I packed it in for the night (got home just before midnight). Added to that I was mentoring a trainee judge who was working alongside me, so I had my hands full. To me judging is a rewarding task and I enjoy it immensely. Among such talented competition it often comes down to one minor fault that separates first and second places. But I must say it's getting harder each year because the top models are so darn good now.

I have to ask the question of why did the "CAR GUY'S" not participate? I recall the lobbying that went in to get extra classes for some of the car sections but not the whole lot and now there are these classes for the rods etc no one enters, great now watch the car classes shrink and eventually the show will become a show that cars are not even catered for.......

I was planning to bring some models down but got sick on Thursday and the flu won in the end.
One might question whether the show actually does cater to car modellers though. I don't have the energy to outline the many reservations I have about the show from a car modelers perspective - that's been done and deleted before - suffice to say that they still call them "Civil Vehicles", a term that reveals a lot about the mindset of IPMS.

Re: PICS Model Expo 2011
Bryce bummer about the flu, i feel i am getting something now myself so i know how you are feeling. Good point about the term used for the classes, most likely time for the representative to put forward a name change to say something more suitable. Anyone got ideas?
