Western Star Series 1000 Empty Western Star Series 1000

Post by Klumpke Fri 19 Oct 2012, 6:44 am

I'm a modeller from The Netherlands.
I'm very interested in Australian trucks.
I want to show you my latest project, an Australian Western Star Series 1000, from the 90's with a 525 horsepower Cummins N14.
My inspiration were some pictures of a WS 1000 from Porter's Livestock, Auckey Queensland, but I did put my own name on it.

Perhaps someone can tell me more about this kind of truck, for example: was it very common in Australia and maybe some pictures of a real WS 1000????

For the those who didn't know:

WESTERN STAR Since 1981 Western Star has been a make in its own right, but it began as an offshoot of White Trucks in 1968 when that company launched a new model aimed at the West Coast market. White Western Star 4900 conventionals soon earned a reputation for rugged ness and reliability in the United States and in Canada where White had set up the production plant at Kelowna, British Columbia. When White collapsed in 1980 and was taken over by Volvo Trucks in 1981, the deal did not include Western Star and the division was re-formed into Western Star Trucks Inc, owned by two Calgary-based companies. As well as the familiar conventionals, some cabover Western Stars were built featuring the White Road Commander cab.

By 1990 the company was experiencing another downturn and it was bought by Australian, Terrence Peabody. Under new ownership, sweeping improvements were introduced plus new models for on/off-highway duties. More engine options were added, including the Detroit Diesel 60 Series. In the early 1990s Western Stars were assembled at a plant in Queensland, Australia, where new models were developed especially for the Australian and New Zealand markets. The company reached an agreement with DAF of The Netherlands to market Western Stars through DAF dealers, and some technical collaboration led to the production of a small number of Western Star 1000 Series rigid eight-wheelers with DAF 95 cabs when Western Star couldn't offer its own cabovers. During the 1990s the company saw a remarkable turnaround, and in 1996 it acquired the British ERF concern as well as Orion Bus Industries of New York and Ontario. In the. same year it launched its new Class 8 Constellation series. All manufacture is now located at Kelowna, apart from the British-built Western Star Commander cabovers based on the ERF EC that were launched in 1997. In February 2000 Western Star sold ERF to MAN of Germany.

This is a nice looking truck - I think I saw this model in a recent Truck Model World magazine, great work on this.

I remember seeing them at the Brisbane truck show and at the Western Star dealership. Seen a few since at second hand sales yard and in Truckin Life magazine etc, but I have never seen one on the road. Obviously not as popular as the bonneted models of course. I always thought that they look a little DAF'ish, and probably are DAF's in disguise for all I know. scratch
