Post by ozibimmer Fri 16 Nov 2012, 7:31 pm

Hi guys
Well I am so excited to be starting this build thread up because I am going to be not only building 2 kits (1x Tamiya) and (1x Fujimi) versions of the BMW 635 race car but I am going to fully modify them to the Jim Richards JPS version.
Now one is going to be Group A 1995 version that took Jim to the #1 spot but also I am doing a Group C 1994 version that Jim drove throughout that season also.
Both kit arrived today so I will be posting a regular update and I will be doing them together, so I will build both motors at the same time to start and do a lot of side by side shots and five you guys my view on which of the two kits is a better build.
Just looking at the kits the Fujimi has a lot more detail, I own a 635 and its much closer to real life but we will have to see.
So wish me luck.
Addam

Here they are
Now I can tell you the White kit (Fujimi Kit) is far more detailed but I have to fill in the sunroof lines as the race cars don't have any sun roof and are ordered from the factory with no sunroof. The Tamiya (orange one) has had the sunroof deleted so its great news and less work.
2 x Modified BMW 635 JPS race cars 3-1
Both kits have good and bad points, Tamiya (orange car) has no boot access. But much easier to build.
2 x Modified BMW 635 JPS race cars 2-2
Both kits are very well boxed.
2 x Modified BMW 635 JPS race cars 1-2
The great thing is I own a 1983 635csi just like the race car so I can get lots of ideas regarding the Build.
My Car is the same race version with no Sunroof and no side guard indicators and High compression motor.

Cool, I'll keep an eye on this one too. I've got a Group C version on the started but not finished pile which will be a mix of the Tamiya race car and the Tamiya road car. If you are fussy about these things you'll need the road version because the real Group C car had a centre console and a back seat that the race car kit doesn't have. Also the induction setup on the road car kit engine is closer to the Group C than the Group A kit engine. However If you ain't as fussy as me you'll do just fine without spending that extra $$$$. Good luck and don't forget to keep us posted.

HaHa
Thanks Shawn now you have done it, the wife is going to kill me LOL
Ivé just gone now and bought another kit straight away as I really want to get it right. I have been toying with building two of the same Fujimi kits over the Tamiya. But what I am doing now is making the Tamiya kit a little different but its going to be a secret for a week while I wait for a few addon parts to enhance it.
So the two Fujimi cars will be a Group A and a Group C and I have ordered one more now (THANKS SHAWN) LOL and that will be the road going version of the earlier model so I can between them get the most of the two cars. I also bought a Tamiya BMW 320 Race car Group 5 that I am going to use the Wheels from that are much wider. The Group C cars had much wider tires and rims and sat a little higher that the Group A cars.
So this is the plan
New road going Fujimi 635 to use part for the Group C car. (Interior rear seats and Console) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FUJIMI-1-24-Enthusiast-Model-BMW-HARTGE-H6S-from-635-CSi-EM-Early-Issue-/160913898582?pt=Model_Kit_US&hash=item2577373c56
Wheels,Rims and side mirrors will be taken from Tamiya 320 race car and also driver figure that comes with the kit.
Modify and remove sunroof lines from both models.
Shawn do you have any good interior pictures of the Group C you could post up.

Todays Build Update
I have already painted the main parts of the Group A car with Tamiya Gloss Black and I must say I am stoked with the outcome of the shine and finish from the can.

OOPS My bad Laughing . Since you just had to do it here are some pics. The black and white ones were taken from an article in Australian Motorracing and GT mag sept. 1984 where they did a 3 page article comparison between the out going Group C car and the next years Group A. They aren't the greatest pics but they are all I have.
2 x Modified BMW 635 JPS race cars Scan0010
Here is the Group C engine setup with 6 big trumpets
2 x Modified BMW 635 JPS race cars Scan0012
I also have this picture of the restored car taken more recently (not by me).
2 x Modified BMW 635 JPS race cars Erez10

One thing to note is that the original build of the group C car (when Allan Grice drove it) had a tan coloured interior but from other pics that I have seen the 84 car had a grey interior.

Hope that helps.

CheersSS

I got a Revell/Monogram 635 in the stash. You built one of them?

Are you aware Studio 27 do a PE upgrade set for the Tamiya kit?

Re the paint - My method with car paint is mist coats until complete coverage is achieved (usually 2, sometimes more) and then heavier wet coats until I am satisfied or have stuffed it up.
10 minutes between coats.
And you know it will dry flat yes?

Hi Guys
Just a update

"Are you aware Studio 27 do a PE upgrade set for the Tamiya kit?"
You read my mind, I bought 3 sets to make 2 great kits with all addon JPS Decals.
More addon Parts for the Build

I have bought 6 kits in total ( Two more Fujimi kits coming 1x race car and 1x road going car that I need for the interior and motor for the Gruop C ) to use parts from to make up two Fujimi kits up in the JPS colours. I am building a Diorama of Frank Gardener and Jim Richards with one of the Fujimi kits and the other will be the back up car that will be the Tamiya Model. I will have a spare engine on display and a car with the wheels off also. or I will have the 1/2 Finish cars from 85 Sandown Castrol 500.
The other Fujimi kit will be the Group C carwith the Flared guards that I am waiting on to come from Germany.
Also the 320i Race car from Tamiya will be donating the Race driver and the wide group C style wheels and older style race seat that is exzctly like the older 635 model Group C car.
Photobucket

Narrow wheels and tyres are standard and exact for the Group A car and the 320i Tamiya Race car will be donating the wide group C style wheels.
Wide wheels for Group C Car, Wide Rim set to the front are for the Group C car from the Tamiya Group 5 Model 320i Racecar

Hi Shawn
2 sets from Pattos Place and 2 sets from
http://www.car-model-kit.com/114-decals/17445-bmw-635-csi-„jps“-decals-reji-model/
I also got my Studio 27 PE upgrade set from these guys.

I have started on the cars but trying to sort out a order to post the pictures as I finish each main part ready to assemble together if this makes sense.

Hi Guys Update
I went back to Tamiya spray and used the Light Tamiya undercoat as the base. The car came out really well after taking all your great replies I use the correct sanding method and very happy with the result.
Painted Shell, Hood and Boot

I have the Floor Pan, Shell, Hood and Boot all read to add the final stages to.
Painted Body and Floorplan

I spent the last two days building the Group C Front Spoiler that is alot more beefy than the standard 635 Group A spoiler.
Tomorrow I will finish it off and paint it.
Oiginal 635 Spoiler and Custom Group C on Left

Here is the type of spoiler I am trying to reproduce, I think mine is okay for the first go at this

Hi Guys
Update today with the Group C car. I received the M635 Road going kit today so I finished building the Flares and front spoiler. The parts still need sanding.I used sheets and scratch built the flares and guards using also tamiya putty and lots of building and rebuilding. The road going car was holding up my Group C car because I need lot of the parts to work out what is next.
The Group A car is coming along nice and I have lots of pictures of the Interior and exterior to try to get it as close to the 1985 version. The Group C is so much harder because of the lack of pictures I have so want to make sure I can get them as close to the real thing as possible.

Both Shells side by side
Group A and Group C JPS

Here you can see just how much wider the Group C car is
