34 Ford Pickup
Aluma coupe is done so now onto the next projects.
This is the Lindberg kit that I cut up. I took 6mm out of the roof height and channelled it 6 mm over the rails. Tray has been altered to suit. At this early stage I have chosen to use the diff and engine/gearbox from the AMT Chrysler 300C just for something different. Don't know whether to paint it show quality or rat rod it.
I have also started this Fairlane as a street/strip. Ford 429 big block and a cool colour. Theres no substitute for big cubes for big horsepower.
I am open to any comments/ideas. You may not get a reply from me as we (myself, wife and son) are off on a road trip for 3 weeks, so I wont be modelling and very little computer access.

Looking good - I like them both.
I reckon paint the pick up shiny - I'm sick of rat rods.
What kit are the whitewall tyres from? They look cool.

Nice start to both projects. Buddy love the wheels on the Fairlane, what kit did they come off, or are they after market?

Re: 34 Ford Pickup
The wheels are from the Monogram F1 Ford pickup (blue truck). The wheels on the Fairy are from an early corvette with flip forward bonnet (year model????) I forgot I even had them as they were in the '32 3 window coupe box, must have anticipated using them on it.
Chris, hows the hot rod going (1:1 scale)?

Re: 34 Ford Pickup
This build has been going quite slowly. I cut up the tray to suit the lowerd cab, looked like shit, so I have decided to build my own from plastic sheet. this will be the floor of the tray with timber inserts.
As for the chassis, I have cut alot of the standard kit out and replaced with my own. The yellow sections are the original Lindberg parts. Everything else is made or from other kits.
Diff - Chrysler 300C
Front suspension - 32 Ford Hiboy
Transmission tunnel has been made from plastic sheet to clear the new gearbox (Chrysler 300C)
Radiator has been build from scratch with plastic sheet, square sections and aluminium.
Radiator cowl (from 32 Hiboy) has been shortened and a steel screen for grill has been cut out.
Seats are 2 Cadillac bucket seats glued together to form a bench seat and then the lower section cut to match the new transmission hump.
A bit of an idea how the truck will look. There will be sides on the tray. More of a styleside tray to hide chassis rails, not flat tray.

Re: 34 Ford Pickup
Yowza! I'd forgotten how bright some of the plastics were back in the olden days when they used to mould them in colour.

Re: 34 Ford Pickup
Wow, that is a killer 34. It looks like you are making a great late 50 hot rod. Early Chrysler HEMI, drop front axle, chop and channel, and wide whites.
The Only thing not right for an traditional hot rod is the seats.
I'll be watching this one closely.

Re: 34 Ford Pickup
This is where the inspiration came from to build this 34 Ford. I know the owner of this hot rod and it was one of the last cars I manufactured the exhaust system on before I left my old job of exhaust fitting. I don't consider mine to be a rat rod as it will be painted in a gloss colour of which I haven't decided on yet. Any ideas???? Does anyone know of a 42 Chev model kit so that I may even build a replica of this rod???

Re: 34 Ford Pickup
Slowly going forward with this one. Here is the styleside tray with timber inserts and a bit of an idea on how the pickup will look. I am quite happy with the tray as it is the first full scratchbuilt item I have made, everything else I have modified has been modified kit parts. Timber looks uneven but it won't be upon final assembly

Re: 34 Ford Pickup
Finally got some primer on. I had to spend a bit extra time on the chassis as I broke the front axle assembly whilst working on steering. I had to find another one in my collection and de-glue the broken one and fit a new one. All good now though. Wheels and engine are painted ready to go. Need to detail the engine some more. Does anyone know where on the heads the sparks plugs go?? This is the Chrysler Firepower V8 engine from the 1957 Chrysler 300C. Hope to have the body and grill assembly painted by Thursday night for our next modellers meeting. Thats the goal anyway, but you all know how murphys luck works. Oh damn, I just cursed myself.

That's looking sweet!
The leads feed from the rear into the cover in the centre of the rocker cover, this pic should help
with covers
with out
Hope that helps!

Re: 34 Ford Pickup
Early Hemis with the plug lead covers still in place (like yours) are dead easy to wire as you just poke all 4 wires on each side up the end of the cover and don't have to worry about firing order at the head end.
Looking good. Shoey's right about the orange. Good and bright.

Re: 34 Ford Pickup
Well I was right, cursed mysef. When sanding back the primer a piece of the rear tray was broken. Had to remake it and re-prime. Stayed home last night to get some colour on it. Managed to get 2 coats of colour on. Il'll let the paint go off then wet sand in preperation for a couple of more coats. Might wait until I have the chassis ready for paint so that it all matches. In between coats of paint, I also managed to locate a steering rack (thanks Subaru Impreza), fabricate mounts for it and mount the rack in position. I also turned up a distributer, and started detailing the engine. Thanks Shoey for those alloy pulleys (pic 3), they will work fine, after a bit of re-fabricating. Chrome headlight buckets or painted??????
