Re: Toyota FJ40 Hard Top
Thanks mate I'm the same as you when it comes to flairs on just about anything. but I can remember seeing a 40 with this style of flairs back in the mid 80's it was the first heavy modified 4x4 that I ever saw to this day I still remember everything about that car like I was looking at a picture of it. I grew up with off roading but that was the car that made me interested in modified 4x4's. think of it like what was the drag car that made you go wow I love these cars.doorslammerfan wrote:Hey dude, those flairs look great and I dont even like flairs as a rule. Roof rack ,maybe one just made out of bars? looks better with ,imo but looks kinda chunky as is. (could be that I've only seen them with the bars setup?). Anyways keep up the brilliant work
as far as the roof rack it still needs a top bar put around it I'm hoping that this will take away some of the chunkiness

Re: Toyota FJ40 Hard Top
Hi all I have been very slack on posting in the last week and a bit, So this update has a fare bit done
1. Inside- The floor pan has been done as well as the dual side fuel tank, The seats are the ones going on the double one is out of the Tamiya Land Cruiser Kit with checker plate rear panel the front seat is from TPB and is going to have a checker plate insert put into the back area, The custom dash is based on a mid 90's Land Cruiser style ( This is some thing that I would like to try when I buy my next one, I think it would be cool) and it sits on a 3 inch body lift
2. Chassis- I have used the Revel CJ 7 chassis which has been modified to suit I have used this as this will be the donor kit after casting. The front diff has been strengthen and converted to coil suspension I still have a little bit to go on it then it should all line up with the chassis, As far as the rear end goes I planed to do a reverse quarter elliptic springs but I am thinking about doing a coil conversion on this as well.
3. Motor- I have been getting interested in doing a diesel motor conversion in a 4X4 for a while, But their are none made in a kit or after market, or so I thought? the other night I was look at the stash in a daze and one of my Uni Mog kits grabbed my eye so I pulled it out and it has a OM352a 6 cylinder diesel which is 5.7L or 350cu in. The only problem is that it is badly detailed to the point that it only has 5 injection line to the 6 cylinders and every thing else is moulded into the block, So after doing a bit of looking on the net I found enough info to correct it and to helpfully make it into a ok motor the good thing about the OM352a motor is that it about the right size for the large Nissan and Toyota 4x4 diesels. The gear box is a ford C6 auto and the transfer case is still to be added

Re: Toyota FJ40 Hard Top
I have been in and out of hospital so the updates have been lacking for a while. I got the modelling gear brought in to me last trip in as I would have gone nut in there with out it, the nurses would not let me have any paint but some friends got it past the door, I thought that they were going to kick me out when we sprayed the body just out side the doors in the smoking area it did not turn out to bad for a left hand spray job the colour is Power + PJ9100 Silver Grey with a white roof. The pictures are not the best they were taken out side but its been so over cast and raining up here at the moment. I also built a camp trailer for it and have just about finished one Canadian canoe, its been made of some plains that I have here left over from a full size one that I built a few years ago and the timber is left over from the HMS Victory wooden ship that I finished not long ago. I am planing to build an Aluminium canoe one as well .
Enjoy

Brilliant and inspirational build mate. You're a credit to the hobby. PM me if you would like this (or another) model to appear in ModelArt Australia magazine.

Wow!! I gotta agree with Tezza,Kynan. All while in hospital with nosy nurses AND left handed. That's dedication. It looks just great.I hope your recovery is going well. Hope you get home soon. Best wishes.Bill

Thanks all for the comments so far it has been one of the few things that I am able to do with minimal pain the infection is almost gone they think that I picked it up in hospital after the last op ( now I know why I hate Hospitals, half the time you are sicker getting out than going in) still might have more to go have another MRI in two weeks the back to the specialist for my neck and still more for rehab for my arm. All I have to say is don't brake your neck more than once. I have finished the canoe and started the flairs on the trailer will post pictures latter today
