Sunday dreaming...
Here's a couple of things I did today instead of working on the mustang and gasser.
This is the old MPC '71 mustang. A kit I've had forever but never got into due to poor chassis, engine and interior detail. However, I'm thinking I now have the skills to fix that, so might just get into it. The wheels are out of the latest release of the Revell '50 Ford pick up.
Eventually it should look something like this:
I reckpn these look great in black and silver.

One of the nicest things about model building is the early creative thinking stage, when you can do "dry runs" with lots of different parts and develop you ideas as you go. That's one nice Mustang in the picture and if anyone can do it justice as a model, you can Bryce.

Re: Sunday dreaming...
I've been inspired by Paul's quickie Johan builds to pull this one out of the box and slap it together as a curbside. (I've also got a litre of gloss black paint left over from fixing my Charger). God knows what 25 year old MPC decals will be like to work with...

Re: Sunday dreaming...
Been plugging away at this one too - great weather this week, so trying to get some paint on while the sun is still shining.
As rubbish as this kit is, the body is really nice, so I spent some time scribing panel lines, guide coating and sanding, filling the cowl vent in the hood (it doesn't appear on any of my reference shots - WTF?) and opening up the scoops on the bonnet.
Have also cut the rear valance off the back panel and moulded it to the body shell so that I don't end up with huge gaps and a mess at the end.
I seem to be unable to do a simple, quick build however...the chin spoiler is missing from this model and it's a fairly fundamental part of the look of the car. After much umming and ahhing, I decided to delve into the parts box and found something from a '71 roadrunner
that is pretty close. Will be a bit of work, but should be worth it.
i just hope those old decals don't crumble when they hit the water...

Re: Sunday dreaming...
Got my chin spoiler made and installed. I was really dreading this one, but it actually wasn't that difficult. Had to shorten it slightly as the mustang isn't as wide as a roadrunner, but otherwise was pretty easy and really adds to the overall muscle look of this car IMHO. I also cut off the front valance from the bumper and moulded it to the body so that I had something to glue the spoiler to.
The kit mirrors were rubbish, so I made some new mounts from sheet plastic and drilled and pinned them. Makes them a lot easier to paint and install.
Have also spent a bit of time working on the fit of the rear wing - it was very high and on the wrong angle out of the box. Also drilled and pinned it so I won't get messy glue marks all over the paint when it comes to final assembly.
This is how it looks installed:
I'm spending a lot of time sweating the small stuff on this build, so I REALLY hope the decals are going to be OK...anyone know of any aftermarket decals for this model just in case?

Re: Sunday dreaming...
Nice progress mate!
I must keep my eye out for one of these kits, I built (or destroyed) one back when they were MPC issues. Now I want to build a replica of one that used to reside in our driveway many years ago.

Thanks mate - this one is an MPC issue too. Here's a pic of the Box - is it the same one?
I've had this kit for about 20-odd years! Always thought it would look nice in Ford XB Falcon 'Mulberry'. Sort of like a GT with the silver accents. Guess that will never happen now as I haven't seen mulberry in a rattle can for ages. Although they are still making Tropicana green...

Re: Sunday dreaming...
Bryce, i have a brand new set if you want them
These are an ugly kit. Be warned that the 351 Cleveland is actually a Windsor. And how can they get a 429 BOSS out of a 428 FE engine, the 429/429BOSS/460 is a completely different engine called the 385 series.
I also have this other ex MPC kit as well, and it is just as ugly.
The wheels on this ended up on my `70 BOSS429.

Re: Sunday dreaming...
Thanks Steve - I'll keep you in mind for when my decals crap out on me as soon as they hit the water - my gut instinct tells me it won't be good...
I'm planning to glue the hood shut, so engine detail isn't an issue.
And yes Paul - you can have the box. It will only go in my recycling bin when the model's finished otherwise.

Re: Sunday dreaming...
Paul, the `73 is basically a race car. There are 2 sets of chrome road wheels, Minilites & Cragars, and the steel race wheels. But no slicks like there used to be.
Interior is race only. There is a race engine and a stock engine. When i built a few of these in the `70s & `80s there where none of the stock parts and had slicks. I think i still have one box with Matchbox on it. Will have a look.

Re: Sunday dreaming...
Paul & Bryce, check these out.
How often do you see old Matchbox boxes these days. I have 2 of the `73 boxes. I would have bought these in the early `80s. A bit of nostalgia for us older modelers.
