Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... Empty Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind....

Post by stump Tue 05 Apr 2011, 9:57 pm

Hey guys,
Two new direction builds, hoping to break my drought.............. Sad
I can't seem to find the right motivation to finish things, these may go some way to improving that.....

Drag racing has always been a love of mine.....got hooked at Surfers, way too many years ago to remember.......
Anyway, my drag racing builds have been less than spectacular to date.
I have a couple of "shelf sitters", they make great 10 footers...... Wink

We all know that large scale drag kits are limited, save for some of the older Revell F/cars and Fuellers often seen on evilbay..... Sad
Well, my tastes differ a little from that anyway......

I happened across a guy in the U.S. making and selling 1/16 drag cars and stuff. Motors, Lenco's, wheels, tyres.....all sorts.
He does lots of 1/25 as well, but the bigger stuff caught my eye. Very Happy

I ordered and received in just over a week (10 days
Shocked ) some very......very kool items.
Think I may have been his first customer on this too....very new to his catalogue.
Very Happy
70.5 Camaro ProMod. Shocked

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7331-vi

This is the very latest design/style they have gone over there....NOT everyone's cuppa, but I LOVE it. Twisted Evil
Motovation will be a PSI blown BAE 572 Hemi, backed up by a Lenco and a Mark Williams rear member.

Getting it to the ground are a pair of massive newly tooled slicks....

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7336-vi

Ok, #2 build........
Well, this has been a dream come true. My favourite Camaro body....They have grown immensely in popularity overseas.....
Drag racings newest "I want one" car. Very Happy Seems every second team is running a 68 or 69 Camaro.....

The build.............(sit back, this ain't gonna be as quick as a quarter mile run......
Wink )
Please....bare in mind, these ARE ONLY early test shots. Embarassed

Body: 1969 Camaro
Mods:
Front fenders stretched to maximum 45 scale inch overhang, from wheel centre to nose.
Rear fenders, stretched to maximum 58 scale inch overhang.
Body narrowed towards the front, resulting in a lose of 12mm from both sides of the grill.
Roof chopped, narrowed and shortened.
Sides extended, they will eventually get a slight curvature towards the sill.
Rake added to body, rear to front.
NEW wheel openings will be formed, once the sides are done.
Hood (bonnet) lengthened and will be glued to fender tops. (removable with guards when finished)

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7329-vi

This is where she's at...The hood has been lengthened, just waiting on glue to cure before continuing.....

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7345-vi

Motovation will be entirely scratchbuilt.
BAE 572 Hemi, PSI blower and a 3-speed Lenco, plus a fabbed rear end.
I had the basic block started years ago....now it has a new home. Very Happy

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7343-vi

Rightio, hang tight.....both these will happen....that's a promise. Wink
cheers guys

Mate you are a freak. That's some of the best model engineering I've seen in a long while. Love the drag racing bodies and parts and they're too good to waste, so please finish one of these to stop me from having a nervous breakdown each time you post.

Hey guys, back with a decent update for yous. Very Happy
Thank you all for the very kind comments, it keeps me spurred on to keep at it too. I need a push now and again..... Laughing
Tezza, we don't want you having no nervous breakdowns...so please, take a seat. Wink

Ok, the body has progressed rather well....after a very hesitant start, I'm seeing results.
This was just after the front/nose went back on, and the hood is now glued in place.
A new scoop was fashioned for the longer hood. I have since widened the slant on the sides of the scoop.

BODY.....

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7347-vi

Long low view from behind, giving an indication of the stance....
Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7349-vi

Closer look at the front guard area, still needing lots more bogg ! Laughing
Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7364-vi

Starting on the new rear guards....
Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7369-vi

New rear deck on....The tail-light panel was narrowed by approx 22mm to bring it in to perspective.
Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7377-vi

Finally got the roof close enough to allow me to re-attach it.
Still a few areas needing a tidy up, but I'll get to them a bit later.
Also, the new sides on the scoop are visible in this shot.

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7381-vi

A few more layers of bogg.....more sanding, shaping.....more bogg. Very Happy
Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7433-vi

This is where we're at this arvo.
New sail panels added to "C" pillars, extended approx 15mm.
New rear window going in, I added some "L" channel around the perimeter this arvo too.
The rear glass will fit in flush.

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7462-vi

MOTOR....
The engine is coming along nicely.
Heads are made, still need to make a rocker cover for one side. Embarassed
Intake manifold for the blower is started, and an update on the blower.....
Well, I decided on a Kobelco Superman style, as I had the blower from a 1/12 Corvette just laying around... Rolling Eyes Laughing
It needed to be widened, as well as a new tail section made up.

Hey, thanks so much guys, glad you'll like where it's heading. Very Happy

Well, I have managed a little more for you...
The rear window is finally starting to look like it belongs there..Contours are falling into place.
(well, they took some manipulating, actually.... Laughing ..and STILL require loads more putty...)

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7490-vi

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7498-vi

The rear "parcel shelf" will be removed, once everything is well and truly set.....along with a ton
of old body panels below all this work. it will all be ground away with a Dremel.
Contours.....YAY ! They're back......Oh yeah, loads more putty here too..... Laughing

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7494-vi

Ok, back to the motor......
The blower is coming along.
Made a new front cover plate, it will "bolt" to the main case.

Test time.....Yep, starting to look like a Kobelco. Very Happy
Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7481-vi

Have the rear cover plate almost finished now. Just need to add a couple more items to it, then some pics..
I've been re-working the injector hat a little too. Found some better reference, so have altered it slightly..
Thanks again guys for stopping by. Cool
cheers

Thank you ALL very much guys, I'm really pleased you all like where I'm heading with it.. Very Happy Wink

Guy, thank you for your very kind offer too mate, I appreciate that. Truth is I have 100's of pics in various stages of builds.
A mate in the U.S. has a buddy building a 1:1 Camaro, and he emailed some awesome photos out to me. They helped a whole lot. Wink

Well, been grinding away.....ever so slowly, but making most parts is time consuming...... Laughing

Have got a brake and clutch pedal assembly started. They will have some functionality......though not really sure why. Laughing But I'll know they work. Wink

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7524-vi

Location of the brake master cylinder is just ahead of the driver. A mesh foot plate will be added approx 2 scale inches above the main floor.

Oh, the beginnings of the chassis......
Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7501a-vi

The mounting position for the pedals.....

The resin Lenco I was going to use, got ditched in favour of one I made myself.
Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7540-vi

Trick Titanium clutch can and Lenco were both made from old plastic bottles I found around the house...
Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7583-vi

The clutch will be linked to the pedal assembly as well..
Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7585-vi

Also made up a front engine mount, along with a mount for the idler pulley....
Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7577-vi

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7579-vi

Checking the final position.....don't want things not lining up at the last moment...... Rolling Eyes Laughing
Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7587-vi

And......my very good mate in the U.S. has very kindly sent me something which just blew me away........
He made these for himself and never really got to use them, but thought I could...... thanks Dave. Wink
These are 1/12 masters he turned up on his mill and lathe. My pics DO NOT do them justice, they are absolutely gorgeous.... Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... 78211

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7552-vi

Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7554-vi

And a quick "dry" run to check sizing.........PURR-fect. cheers
Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... DSCF7556-vi

Yes, he even sent several test sets he had cast in black resin, which I reckon are good enough to use as they are....
As promised to Dave, I am going to make molds and cast two sets for myself (yep, another project... Twisted Evil ), then send them straight back to him.
He was ever so kind to offer them for me to use, I can only honour his wishes and send them straight back, no making multiples and selling them off. Drag racing bug.....not the VW kind.... 848297

Well, that brings things up to speed again guys....
Have been working on some steering components the last few nights...the steering shaft and wheel are temporarily mounted
with functional "U" joints and I'm working out a rack to suit.....
More soon.....
cheers
