RM 49 Mercury OOB
Got this finished. A flame mask from Chris was used on this one, not as easy as Chris makes it look I tell ya, it's not perfect but I'm pretty happy with the way they came out, one big F*ck up but I can live with it. Flames are pearl white base then different colour candies, all in acrylic lacquer. When I un masked it, it looks like the colour has pulled back from the flames and makes it look like it has a light pinstripe around them, I like it.
Overall, a nice kit, went together well.

Sorry John, it's actually a confederate flag but that gives me an idea for future builds.dv8v8 wrote: like the southern cross inside the roof

Re: RM 49 Mercury OOB
the confederate flag is a southern flag with a cross on it and often reffered to as a southern cross, eg the book by P Cornwall "beneath the southern cross".

Re: RM 49 Mercury OOB
the southern cross is the thing in the sky only seen in the Southern Hemisphere. I have only ever heard the Confederate flag called that and the Rebel flag nothing else and I doubt anybody else has either but if you have found an obscure reference to it being called that then who am I to argue I'm sure I'm not the only one that thought as I did with your post, sorry for the confusion.
No matter, should post the pics on SA forum, see how long it stays up

Re: RM 49 Mercury OOB
Hey, nice oob Kirk I didn't think you could resist modifiing or changing something. Paint work looks super smooth (as always) and the flames look great, nice one!
Some useless trivia for ya,
I remember doing a highschool assignment in Canada, about the civil war and the meaning of flags. The Rebel flag is not actually the Confederate States flag. The Confederate flag is called, "Stars and Bars", (white and red stripes with 13 stars). The Rebel flag is called the "Battle Flag of Northern Virginia".
The Rebel flag is also known as the Dixie Flag and the Southern Cross, but only in America as Australia has it's own meaning for the Sourthern Cross, that's why you'll never hear an Aussie call the Rebel Flag, "a Southern Cross flag".

Re: RM 49 Mercury OOB
Nice work, that one comes out of the box OK without too much 'assistance' although I personally still have trouble with the windscreen and dash decals.
The flames turned out great and I too love the Confederate Battle Flag.

Re: RM 49 Mercury OOB
Excellent! Came out a treat, the pinstripe effect is a bit of a bonus. Seems to appear mainly on dark cars with a white based flame. Speaking of dark, what blue did you use on the body? Looks cool on the Merc. How'd you do the seat piping too?
Re: RM 49 Mercury OOB
G'day Chris,
The blue is Toyota Galaxy Blue pearl Holts rattle can and the piping is light blue Sharpie.

Re: RM 49 Mercury OOB
Thanks for all the comments fella's, appreciate it. Don't think I'll be going the box stock route again for a while, can't say there is much out there that I like enough to go that way, maybe a RM 41 Willy's
Will def be using more of Chris's flame masks tho, very cool, application onto the dark body was a bit difficult, bit hard to see, just need to take your time.

Best looking Merc I've seen in a long time. The flames look a treat, and the Confederate flag on the roof lining is brilliant - well done.

Re: RM 49 Mercury OOB
Hey, Kirk, just so happens that there's a 41 Willys flame mask nearing completion......
Dark bodies are a bit harder to mask, unfortunately the mask film only comes in the transparent grey.
Sharpie idea is cool, may have to investigate further!

Re: RM 49 Mercury OOB
Cracking build Tubbo. I can usually only just get to painting the inside of the roof let alone put a flag in there.
Another "rebel flag" fact - posting a pic on the Scale Auto forum with a visible confederate flag will result in frothing at the mouth and deletion of the pictures.
I am a great believer in the use of sharpies. So much easier to get a clean line than with a brush (especially with my shakey hands). Never thought of using them for seat piping though.

Beautiful - timeless style...
What's with the flag though? Do you have to be a redneck to like customs...?
