Leftover parts are a gas.
Sitting at the table this arvo and waiting for the next coat of primer to dry on the Bonneville project, I started work on my latest Kustom. That one is to be finished for the Hot Rod Show in January. It's a '39 Mercury and will use a few '40 Ford parts, which left me with a body and no chassis or interior tub.
However I do have a few old Gasser Chassis in my parts dept. so I got to thinkin' and trying out a few wheel and tyre combos. Here's the end result, yet another project that to be worked on concurrently in order that I might at least get one completed this year.

Re: Leftover parts are a gas.
Hey Carps - when you drop the engine in, the front will go down 6 (scale) inches. Have you allowed for that?
Seriously that looks like one mean gasser coming up mate.

Re: Leftover parts are a gas.
Made a little progress this week and since I've gotta get one done for 2011, I'll be working on this whenever I get some free time.
I have no idea what the front axle was from, but it fits in a fabricated cross-member and uses the split bones from an AMT Deuce kit. The front wheels are from the Lill Coffin and will be fitted with Hurst Airhart disc brakes as would have been used in a '60s gasser.
Under the hood is a '327 Chevy from the AMT 34 coupe kit, now with the enderle injection from an AMT '55 Chev.
The chassis is a '55 Corvette, which was too short so cut the front off and fabricated the front rails, suspension, engine and trans mount and cross-members. The rear is as it was in the "Vette with traction arms from the AMT '37 Chev added. Rear wheels are parttsbox items as are the wrinkle wall slicks.
Most of the chrome and heavy stuff has been removed from the body, hence all the holes. The big holes in the back panel let out the air that's always been an issue with '40 coupes used for racing. The interior is all fabricated from flat sheet, with seats and all other hardware from my parts dept. I plan to have orange plexiglass windows to help keep the weight down.
Another challenge for this one will be the exhaust and I plan top attempt custom over the frame fenderwell headers made from solder and aluminium tube.
There'll be a large tube type rear bar with a chute and tailamps mounted to it and maybe a couple of towing tabs under the front.

Re: Leftover parts are a gas.
Looking good Carps.
The tricky bit with making your own extractors is getting both sides looking the same. Just remember that it's hard to see them both at once so minor differences won't show when they are on the car...

Re: Leftover parts are a gas.
Thanx Zen, been searching a few kits for something that might work, but I'm not liking anything I see.
One of the old AMT Deuces had a neat set that would be perfect but I don't seem to be able to find them in any of my 'in stock' kits.
Also the lumps that appear in the paint are not visible to they eye, so I figure my latest little camera is just too good, or I musta sprayed water on the thing before I shot the pics. That isn't to say the paint is perfect, because I've tried to make it look like a quickie backyard enamel job, leaving a few sanding marks etc. to show through.

Re: Leftover parts are a gas.
Hopefully AMT does a parts pack with "Gasser" or "Drag" parts, how sweet would a pack of straight axles, injection, Moon tanks, etc go down??

Re: Leftover parts are a gas.
They aren't properly attached here but I'm halfway pleased with how the solder headers worked out.
You can also see in this shot how the '55 Corvette Chassis has been cut off and the new rails added at the front.
Since the early 'Vettes hooked up really hard in stock form, I left the back half of the chassis as it was except for the heavy duty shocks from an old race car kit and the traction arms of course which are not original. I left the centre X in for stiffness so when this thing hooks up it'll carry both front wheels for some distance.
Inside it's all race car too, starting with the flat dash and photo etch instruments.
All great gassers had a cool name and I think this one fits nicely.
A few sponsors decals and it's looking almost ready for the quarter mile.
There's still a bunch of details need to be added like front hubs and the rear bar, chute etc. and I tried the lack wash in the door shut lines but think I need to do it over as it still doesn't look quite right.
Once the windows are in I'll also add the finishing touch B/G 40 will be hand painted in white.
