Chopped 49 Ford
I thought I would build a led sled using the Amt 49 Ford Coupe kit and share the mods as I do them, started with a roof chop,
Rear window cut lines marked out
Window cut out and small corner piece marked and ready, I need this corner to make the window the proper shape at the end.
Rear pillar cut and the rest marked for cutting, this is 3mm tape it will end up with about a 2.5 inch out the front and 3inch in the rear.
Roof off
Working out where everything has to be moved to.
Middle pillar ready to be cut and moved back.
I cut under the gutter right on the edge so the primer will fill the cut and I don't have to try to putty and sand the join.
Gap filled with styrene and rear pillar trimmed and put in place
The roof glued back on, also had to trim the bottom of the window so the rear pillar could come forward about 4mm.
Rear window back in almost went straight back in the hole, I'm putting it on much more of a lean to get a longer smoother looking roof.
Gap filled with styrene and ready to be filed down and everything puttied up.
Side view, going to shave off the rear window mold to keep the line smooth, now for a crap load of sanding and putty, and sanding and putty.

Re: Chopped 49 Ford
Graet stuff Morrie, nice clean work with your cuts and filler pieces. Takes a bit of bravery to chop em up like this, but I guess once you work out how it's going to happen, it aint so hard.
Watching this one for sure.

Re: Chopped 49 Ford
Thanks guys, there are easier ways to chop a roof but I didn't want to cut the roof this time and wanted the slammed back window look, I have been sanding and sanding, should be in primer tomorrow if this layer of putty gets the roof flowing. Ill put more progress photos up tomorrow nd work out what else I want to do to it.

Re: Chopped 49 Ford
Ok more done and almost to the paint stage.
Got the rear window a bit better and smothered it in putty.
Sanded that down but got a little excited trying to get it perfect and sanded through the plastic, don't do this it sucks..
then had to glue thin styrene to the inside to build the plastic back up.
while I had the dremel out cutting the window back out I shaved everything off the body starting with the side trims then the handles and boot hinges.
I also thought I would French the headlights, so I made some blanks for the light to sit against back into the hole.
This is pretty much all the mods for the body to get the look I'm after and got the first layer of primer on, it fell over on the bench but most of it will be sanded off anyway.
A couple shots to compare it with a stock shell.
Will look sweet on its guts with some cool wheels. now I just have to sand the primer, then add more primer then sand it for paint, next is the chassis to get it as low as possible then the detailing can start.

They are good body stands they fit inside the body perfectly, and only 1 had any Turkey left in it and they keep me warm when I build, my room don't have windows all round just a 95% closed in sun room.

...have you given any thought as to how you are going to break up that slab-looking side which is always a problem with the 49 customs?

Re: Chopped 49 Ford
Unfortunately My building spot stays where it is, living at Parents house atm after moving back across to the east coast from the west coast and getting work near their house, so only spot I can have until I get sorted in my own place.
mgy- I like the look of the big shaved smoothed out sides so just going to leave it as it is, might do something with the paint to give it more shape, I have chosen the colour just working out what custom stuff I will do with the spray. once this cold snap passes ill get into the paintwork, don't want it to blush after all this work.
