Looking very nice, off to a great start.
I reckon that motor could be a Cummins "Formula" 290, little bit hard to tell, but that appears to be what they came out with stock, but there were a few options with that model. It's definately a MK.3, which had bigger radiator options for higher powered donks for interstate work, so it's possible it could be a higher powered motor than the 290. From the pics of Formulas I have it does look very similar. The box that's another matter, as I think I have mentioned it is probably a Roadranger or Spicer. If you happened to take any cab pics I might be able to pick it from the Gearstick, the RR and Spicer are usually reasonably easy to pick.
You'll have a PM before the end of the weekend as long as nothing crops up around here, with some more stuff I found out about the Tolmer fleet of Atko's.

Last night as I was looking at the pictures I had taken I realised that on the front right corner of the cab, about half way up was a small badge. When I zoomed in on it, it was indeed a Cummins Formula badge, the only thing I couldn't make out were the numbers. The first was a 2 but wern't sure if the others were 0's, 6's or 9's.

I don't have a photo of the gearstick but do have one of the top of the gearbox so I will post that tonight.

Look forward to any info that you may have been able to dig up atjr

Ok, here is the only shot I have of the gearbox. I know its not alot to go on. Can't work out what the takeoff on the top is, at first I thought it might have had something to do with the gearshift but that didnt make sense as it appears that the shaft is built to rotate. I am assuming it is some kind of power takeoff to run the hydraulics.

I sent a link to this thread to a friend who is a Agi driver to see if he could recognise it ,

It is a Cummins engine and a roadranger gearbox. The shaft out the top of the box with the uni-joint is the gearchange. I actually found one of those uni-joints in the shed half an hour ago! Pity the truck went in 1995.

A bit more info from Michael ,

Oh Ian,
I forgot to say that the other end of the gearshift probably goes to a selector box. The box is about 3" tall, 3" wide and 5 or 6" long. The shaft from the shift enters from the back and about 2" of shaft pokes out the front. There will be a uni-joint on the shaft just before the shaft goes into the box.
The gearstick comes out the middle of the top of the box. There is a dome about the size of half a tennis ball on the top of the box with the stick coming out the middle of the dome.

Well, that is how it was on my truck with the same type of gearbox. But Atkinson may have done it different!

I will go through my "Truck and Bus" magazine collection to see if I can find anything else.

Cheers Michael.

Tell Your mate Micheal to try around the mid 70's editions. I found some stuff for Mr Mopar from Sept 75 on an earlier sister truck to this, and July 76 on the Mk3 model release which this truck is. There could be more that I missed, I couldn't find a road test on one which I reckon there would have been at some stage. I have most issues but my collection has a couple of holes.

Ok guys, bit of a mixed bag this week. Had to cut the second steer axle off and move it forward a few mm to position it properly. Luckily didn't damage anything. Parts turned up from Auslowe so now I have the wheels and tanks I wanted. Have managed to scatch up a bumper, and have done the artwork for the decals.

Hi all, made a bit more progress. Have made the handrails and drilled all the mounting holes for the marker lamps and horns. More importantly have nearly finished off the battery box, locker, tanks and spare mount, and started to prime the chassis.

Very nice.
Now you have gone to all the trouble of doing the Tolmer decal artwork, you'll have to build a model of their ACCO watercart to go next to it in the cabinet.
I saw the real truck getting around a couple of weeks ago, still goes alright for an old girl.

Thought about the ACCO. When I got the pics of the Atki it was parked close by but I didn't take any snaps of it. Would be a good project though.

Hi Ian, I have scanned a few things out of Truck and Bus magazine. I have made an album on photobucket.....

If you could pass that on to the model forum.

Cheers Michael.

Those articles are fantastic Ian, please pass on a big Thankyou to Michael for digging these up. Just great to read a bit of history on these trucks and look at some of the different configurations of engines and chassis. The tipper with the tri-drive is just awsome! Seen photos of a cattle truck with a similar setup.

This build looks better each time I see it. I always like seeing scale builds that are this close to the 1to1 vehicle. Excellent attention to detail.
