Painting during the cold weather.
Hi guys, I suffer the same problem every year - how to spray paint the models when it's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey? Normally I spray out in the garage which is of colourbond construction and fully lined with the back of the external sheet. Short of having it lined and climate controlled, are there any other options ? Obviously doing it inside is the go but Mrs Deaf As' sense of humour may not stretch that far as where I build is the same room she sews in, makes teddy bears in, does all that stuff with cards, stamps, beads etc etc etc. The old 'kero' type heater doesn't stand a chance in the shed, the old man suggested one of those gas things like a tube on its side that shoots heat out one end but I'd have to empty the shed every time I wanted to paint or learn to paint while standing on the bloody thing. Can you buy booths that can be used inside big enough for 1:24 trucks that actually work that don't cost a fortune. I do have a drying cupboard in the 'hobby' room with a halogen light on a dimmer switch for heat control. I think I can talk her around if I can keep the 'overspray' and smell under control. Apparently $100 worth of teddy bear mohair material isn't the same if it smells like thinners - go figure! Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Tim.

Re: Painting during the cold weather.
Portable gas heater.
Won't heat a whole shed but will warm the area around the spray table enough to get a glossy finish.
However, I generally don't bother to try for shiny.
Winter is for scratchbuilding, preparing bodies, doing custom bodywork or building stuff that doesn't require shiny paint.

Re: Painting during the cold weather.
Yeah, I'm using a spray gun. Will shop around in town and see if I can find a heater. Had a go the other day at spraying the tool boxes for a trailer, 2 came out ok, 1 was dull and 1 crazed on the front like it was reacting with the paint underneath. Not sure why as they all had the same prep so maybe it's just the lack of temperature?

Re: Painting during the cold weather.
Mix your paint in the A/B jar, and sit that in warm water, I also have one of those big Halogen spot lights and as soon as I put down a layer, I hold it in front of the halogen lamp which will stop the blushing, I also ease up on the weight of the layer, thinner coats seem to work best when cold. Also try using a box about the size of an old apple box/crate, and heat this up a little with the lamp aswell, the warm air will also help. This info is based only on what I have experienced, and I ONLY use automotive acrylic paints.
Good luck!

Re: Painting during the cold weather.
what you can do is what l used to do before l could paint inside
but it works either in a shed or in the house
just before you start to paint is warm the body/parts with a hair dryer
and invest in a food dehydrator they are fairly cheap l got mine from ebay for around $45.00
as soon as you paint throw it in the dehydrator make sure you have a paint stand for the parts
it usally take around an hour or so for the paint to gas out

Re: Painting during the cold weather.
Thanks for the tips guys. I've used a variation of most of them in one way or the other. Painted in the laundry, halogen lights, warmed parts in the heated drying cupboard, warmed the paint up before hand - mostly worked. Have posted the results in the Good day or Bad day section.

Re: Painting during the cold weather.
I painted my road runner which i have just finished, in the shed and it was 1 degree outside, just put it in front of one of those 100mm round halogen lights from bunnings, between coats. Nothing wrong with that paint job. So no need to get too fancy i think mate. Spend your coin on more kits i reckon.

Re: Painting during the cold weather.
I think you might be understating your painting skills because your road runner is Awesome! I do agree about spending more on kits though, best idea I've heard all day.
