woot go my plymouth prowler taking H/C in 85 to present lol didnt even know till i was taking pics of the winners lol...what i dont understand is...bens cruiser was wayyyyyy better then that prowler but it didnt get anything good show tho and i only broke one model when i got home dam big foot fell off the tote box and smashed into a few pieces oh well. grats to all the winners except shoey hes not getting an invite next year is that correct? he can organise but not show up? haha lol good on ya fellas good stuff

New category this year, Movie Themes. I got 1st place for my Yenko Camaro. Also got a Highly Commended for my pro street Mustang in the Cars Competition category.

yeah was an awsome show i think every one was real tired thow cause i got third for my shed dio and i forgot the roof but was a good range and heaps to look at next yeahs gunna be better.

i do have one question mabe some one on here can clear up for me, on the entry forms it states that a diorama is a model in a theme or on a base that enhances the view, yet i seen a lot of cars on platforms or in a theme or that enhanced its view but they were in with the cars and most of wich got the trophies. and no im not sookin or wingeing im just trying to find out as a model show rookie where the line is between a car on display and a theme cause i kinda got confused when i seen some of them thats all.
still loved the show and wow to alot of the cars and congrats to all who entered

Mate I'm with you, I don't want to sound like a sore loser but in my opinion all vehicles should be "flat" on the table, any model on a base is a diorama. It can be frustrating being beaten by a vehicle on a base or turntable but I like to think of it like this; my model didn't need to be enhanced and it faired quite well. When reading Scale model Enthusiast mag all models are not on a base. This topic can be quite controversial as there are many theories about what constitiutes a diorama. To me the arguement is easy, if your vehicle is not flat on the table then it is a diorama, this includes felt sheets, mirrors to simple bases and all the bells and whistles. Perhaps some of our american friends may be able to offer some clarification. What would happen if we all used some form of base to display our vehicles, "No more room in the inn". What does everybody else think?

These are the definintions/competition rules as found on the Queensland Model Hobbies and Expo website.

SMALL DIORAMA: A scene that tells a story which includes figures, models and scenic effects. The shape of the base is open but the overall size of the SMALL DIORAMA must fit within the boundaries of a 250mm X 250mm square template. No part of the diorama may hang over the edge of the base. Bases as well as subject matter will be judged in this class.

LARGE DIORAMA: A scene that tells a story, which includes figures, models and scenic effects. A LARGE DIORAMA will be one that does not meet the criteria for a SMALL DIORAMA, i.e. it is greater than 250mm x 250mm in overall size. Bases as well as subject matter will be judged in this category.

ENVIRONMENTAL BASES: will be allowed in all categories but will NOT be judged unless specifically provided for within the rules e.g. Vignettes, Small and Large Dioramas. A base may be plain or simulate the natural surface on which the subject or prototype may be found. A single figure may be used for the purpose of the subject scale. More than one figure may be used provided they represent the subject’s crew (not service crew). These figures can be placed ON the model but will NOT be judged. The Chief Judge, will at their discretion, move an entry to a class deemed more appropriate, should it be considered that the Environmental Base supplied dominates the model and or display. Alternatively, the Chief Judge may request the entrant remove the Environmental Base from display, allowing only the model entered to be displayed.

These are the rules set for a state wide competion not a NNL style comp were it is purely for fun and display.

Blah,blah,blah you can argue this point till the cows come home and still not come out with a definative answer. Everyone and every show has different rules and opinions.
Some think a diorama needs to have figures in it others dont and a lot of comps wont allow turntables etc.
Here's what I think, which I'm sure there'll be a few of you that disagree with.
A car displayed on a mirror base is fine to enter in a car section.
A car on a turntable can be entered in a car section.
A car on a base with grass, trees etc is a diorama and as such should be entered in the diorama section. The Anglia I like and Shoey's 57 Chev would be in the Used, Abused and Neglected catagory at the NSW NNL Titles. If we didnt have that catagory they would be in the diorama section.
Mirrored bases, turntables and dioramas add greatly to any model comp, they provide something different and interesting to view. If we all just placed our cars in a line on a table it'd be a pretty dull display for modellers and the general public alike.
There's no definative answer for this and at the end of the day it's up to the show organisers to administer, if they are happy to allow cars on enhanced bases to be in the cars sections that's their call, if you dont like it you can either:
1. Tell them on the day! And ask why? No use whinging after the event.
2. Start your own show and see how much work actually goes into organising and running one. It's not as easy as it looks.

No bagging from me Rob- you make good sense.
An environmental base definitely will give a model an edge over one on a plain base or with no base at all. Having said that, I like to make environmental bases for my models just to give a sense of scale. If I'm allowed to enter comps with environmental bases I will but by the same token if they're not allowed I have no qualms whatsoever.
Mirrored bases are superb for showing all the work done underneath your car and even a plain wood base with a brass plaque gives any model a touch of class.

I am a little upset that this matter has come up.
This is a fair question BUT does it need to be aired like dirty laundry?
I would have appreciated this to have been brought to my attention on the day.
As any organiser would understand, it is hard to keep everyone happy.
Remember this is a NNL, there are no sheep stations or pink slips at stake!
I have over 100 photos of models on bases from the highly successful QMHE. here are a few.

I have no problems with the bases. In cases at QMHE the judges know that the base is not to be judged of say, a car class, it is more a visual thing for the public, showing what style you are going for. Take my 58 sedan delivery, I build it to be a custom show car, so put it on a mirrored base with a fence around it as you would with a 1:1 show car, that alone should have told people what I was going for, why there was no wiring visable in the engine bay and other things were hidden. Shoey's 57 to me, with that base, was saying this car has been out in the weather for a long time and this is the result BUT if I was at the show and judging it, I would have been judging the car not the base. If it was in the diarama class I would have judged the whole thing.
If you are building out of the box then I don't see the need for a base but when your stuff is highly modified the base can help tell the story.
I'm with the others, if you had a problem, you should have said so at the time, too late after the fact.
