It's hard to believe that it started as Evergreen sheet. Well done dude, just amazing!
Re: XE Falcon S-Pack ** so anyway 8 years later- **
front looks a bit flat (angle of the headlights area). everything else looks pretty spot on.

Hi guys thanks for the kind words.aussie muscle wrote:

Yeah you're right aussie. It hasn't gone un-noticed at this end BUT it looks worse in photos than it does when it's in front of me, so it'll stay as is. I'm not unhappy with it.
Next time it's all together I will try to get pics at a more flattering angle.

Id say its just the angle and lighting in that pic, if the camera was lower we'd be able to see the rollpan kinda suck-under the side and stuff like that. Loving watching this build!

Re: XE Falcon S-Pack ** so anyway 8 years later- **
Hey chaps. Life rolls on and the Falcon is getting less and less attention from me so it feels like I'm doing a weeks work over two months but at least I haven't abandoned it. This update is all about the rear of the car from the window down to the valance. I started with the Aunger louvre for the rear window. I did intend to take photos of every step but as I was making it up as I was going along I soon forgot about doing that. So here it is in all it's evergreen glory.
The next job was to make the tail light reflectors. I had originaly planned to not do this but I just couldn't live with myself if I decided after the job was done that it didn't look right. I removed the area where the reflectors sit.
Scratched up them reflectors.
While I was in the area I decided that I didn't like the look of the valance/ roll panel as it was full of pin holes from the resin and I figured that it would be easier to make a new one then it would be to mess around getting it right, so off it came.
The new one.
To make up for the fact that the curbside version will have less to look at I will add a trailer, so I needed to make a tow bar.
I made the towball from a bit of sprue. I stuck the sprue in the Dremel and machined it down with various knife and chisel blades.
I made the tongue and added the ball to that.
I junked the old tail light lenses because they weren't nice enough and made new ones.
One other issue I had was that the interior tub was made to fit the full detail chassis and the tub sits in place without any fuss with that chassis but with the curbside chassis the interior tub can find itself out of position pretty easily so to remedy that I added some strips of Evergreen to the front of the tub,
and some scraps to the underside of the bonnet.
Now it clicks into a place of its own.
Obviously the trailer will be the next major build step but I still need to do the windscreen wipers and fine tune some other things but I will be putting casting the chassis and the other as yet uncast parts on top of the to-do list.
I think that's it.
CheersSS

WOW WOW WOW. Outstanding effort Shawn!
Question, how many hours and attempts would you put into the Aunger louvre?

Cheers Adam. A couple of hours over 2 or 3 days and amazingly only 1 attempt. It was supposed to be a prototype but it came out useable. I just need to figure out how to cast it.Adam Clark wrote:WOW WOW WOW. Outstanding effort Shawn!

Back in the 80's, the good old Aunger louvre was a must have, you pulled that one off PERFECTLY!! Once again mate. incredible building.

Re: XE Falcon S-Pack ** so anyway 8 years later- **
Shawn, you truly make the impossible seem so achievable. It is a shame that you didn't take photos as you went along, but I understand completely - more time taking photos etc is less build time, and time is so precious to us all.
I do get so much from your step by step approach though. Someone has mentioned before the idea of a book dedicated to this build. I agree. There are so many techniques that new and old builders would benefit from, and being a cottage industry from a car perspective, the ability to build our own is crucial, if we want to see Aussie cars on benches, in display cabinets and in model comps. Big kudos to the manufacturers who take the time to create some of our iconic cars, but I am sure none of them would have taken on the XE, let alone a curbside and a full detail version.
Big thanks again for sharing Shawn, just bloody amazing, and I really admire your skill, your clean lines, and your imagination to figure out how to build it, then build it so cripsly and cleanly. Well done.

Re: XE Falcon S-Pack ** so anyway 8 years later- **
apologies to Eric Clapton.
Hi all, here's a surprise update for you.
Just a basic 6x4 trailer, modelled on the one that my grandfather owned. Once again I was too much in the zone to take blow by blow photos so here is the finished item. Mostly Evergreen with Revell '68 Mustang tyres, some sort of Chevy wheels plus nuts and bolts and some chain. The tray is diamond plate from TPB. It took about a week and a half to do.
I will eventually weather it with chips, scratches, dust and rust. I will try to get it somewhere near this https://ozautobuilders.forumotion.com/t3949-weathering-with-hairspray-37-ford?highlight=34+ford
I would have supplied pictures of it hooked up to the Falcon but half of the chassis was being moulded at the time so you'll have to wait untill I have finished casting the chassis and the other parts that are required.
CheersSS

Nice work as usual Shawn, but I think it would ride a bit hard with both ends of the spring mounted solid.

Re: XE Falcon S-Pack ** so anyway 8 years later- **
Hey ya all. I have gotten a few boxes ticked over the last few weeks and I'm happy to have the build up to the stage that the curbside version is only a few small details away from the painting stage. So here we go.
There was still some unfinished business on the trailer. First up I wasn't happy with the oversized nuts on the mounts so I redid those with smaller nuts and took the opportunity to lift the springs off of the rails too.
I needed a spare tyre and wheel so I cast another wheel and drilled out the nuts and hub. It will be mounted on the front and tied to the rail with rope.
Then it was time to cast the chassis sections. I was really happy with how they came out as they only required minimal clean up.
After I had cast them all I started to see ways I could add extra detail to the chassis so I started with the diff cover. I made a copy of the cover from the full detail version and removed the cast in one from the curbside chassis.
Before I went any further I made the exhaust system.
I felt it needed some springs so I cut up a spring from my spares box and glued them to the rear of the diff. This is one of those things that I should have done before I cast it but I didn't think of it.
I added nuts and bolts and some brackets to the chassis and rear suspension as well as the watts link and steering arms.
I also did some more clear casting. I have a high reject rate with clear casting so I'm still not a fan of it.
I painted up the tail lights for effect. I broke the corner off the one on the left so that lense will have to be replaced.
I whacked some BMF on the reflectors.
I cast the rear bumpers too.
Looks like a Falcon.
Just need to add some more details to the chassis like fuel and brake lines and maybe the hand brake mechanism too and as I'm still not fully experienced in having those particular details on my builds I will be using it as practise for the full detail version.
Once I'm finished fart-arsing around with the final chassis details the curbside version will be good for paint. Yay.
Thanks for looking
CheersSS
