Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
Thanks Kirk and Fred..
You better PM me that number please Tubbs....might be needing it very soon...................
Well, the head is nearing the end of it's journey.....only a few bolt holes to make, then off for some primer and paint.
The funny looking pieces to the left are the intake runners...just two tubes, siamesed at one end, the a kink added...
Oil cap is from the kit...will probably leave it unglued, so I can top up the oil when required......
Just a quick overall view of the final assembly as it will sit.....didn't turn out too bad...the right rear bolt slot is off centre, but can be lived with,
once it's in, it wont be that noticeable.....
Many thanks guys....next update will hopefully show what the induction will be......More soon.
cheers
Greg

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
Just a couple of tips with your roll cage.
1: I hope you used the right grade of filler wire when you tig welded the tubes, as the wrong grade could fatigue in a roll over and fail.
2: you may have to get the welds X-rayed to make sure you got the correct penatration when you welded it together.
I work with automotive engineers if you want it inspected and ADR certified. if you want there number PM me.
Your a nutter. This things looking awesome keep it up.

Man, Greg U amaze me mate. It makes me feel ashamed that I can only builld OOB with a few parts that R built by me (ei: extractors) I only wish I had the gear to do all this sort of stuff I'd build more large scale cars, the work U've done on the motor so far is wonderful how can I do stuff like that with very few resources and no lathe type equipment, well done Greg on wot U've done so far.

Yeah, I know I should've tried harder.....the cap does exhibit signs of a sink mark, so I may need to tidy it up a little......spiritman wrote:Kit oil cap ?

Rocket,
Thanks mate....I may ship it up to you, so you can run her through some tests, huh....
Thanks Slowly, Blakey and Dingo..
Dingo,
No special tools or lathes in my shed....... Only regular X11 and a razor saw...files, lotsa putty.....and an over abundance of patience....(cost = infinite..)
I often wish for a lathe, but I reckon I'd drive myself nuts.......
More soon.....just re-doing my inlet runners, first lot looked like shite.....................
Cheers guys
Greg
Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
New inlet runners are done.
Although this won't appear to be a very big update, many hours went into getting these things to at least look similar....
Boss' were added to their tops, these will be "machined" down so they are all level, then tapped for the addition of linkage mounts.
The Weber's will also get their mating surface "machined" down, as they have the manifold flange molded as part of the carb flange.....
Just testing, to make sure it looks ok.....
Back with more over the next day or two....
cheers
Greg

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
Thanks Greg...Nah, all good. Got the tension pretty close on all the bolts.....
Mini update........
Well, after 4 pretty solid days last weekend and another 2 this weekend, things are shaping up...................
Need to sort out an issue or two with the hood....that's half sorted..
Getting the motor to sit in there, that was another issue............................it slanted the wrong way, before this pic, it slanted the opposite way.....
Swapped engine mounts side to side, then modified the sump to suit.
It's pretty tight in there.....
New sump, along side the "stock" unit....New sump has again been modified some more..to clear the steering rack.
Block painted, dipstick added.....starting to take shape.
Ok......this is where I started to get those weird kinda feelings.......There was something that just didn't sit right in my head.....
There was no other alternative.......strip the rocker cover down !
I received some AWESOME detail photos through the week, emailed from a guy in Japan who has had a 240Z in his workshop. He took some fantastic pics for me.
With this fresh info under my wing, I started to get it "right"........................
The top of the cover was flattened some more...making it look a lot more like it should, then I added this.....
Still need to re-paint the fins on top...I'll leave that till I'm finished handling things.....
Manifold brace added, along with the start of the carb linkage mounts....
Getting there......slowly.............................
More soon guys....
cheers
Greg

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
Hey guys, sorry for the delay.....
Hasn't been that much going on since Christmas..least not modelling wise......Bought myself a new 2010 model 1:1 toy 2 months ago.
The 240 is still a "work in progress"....probably a never ending one....................
I have however, been doing a bit the last week or two.....remember I was going to build a "stock" version as well...??
Ok, well I have been working on that.
Exhaust will either be twin tip or single tip...??? Single will suit the build better, but twin looks better.......
Engine bay smoothed, nooks an cranny's filled, bumps added.....
Colour picked out and tested.....
Trying to get this one fairly accurate as well, reference showed the kit was lacking a heat shield.
So, I made a basic one from flat sheet, added some ribs and fitted it up with bolts.
Also made the throttle linkage mounts and install a linkage rod.
I then set about making the carbs a bit more life-like.....
A mount was added for the choke cable, plus the choke linkage..(made from 1/24 wire looms..)
Added the fuel line and fittings from the pick-up bowl to main body.
All linkage added, oil hose from manifold to block...starting to look the part.
Started working on the air cleaner assembly yesterday arvo.....still a ways to go there........
More on BOTH builds soon guys.
cheers

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
Thanks for your kind comments guys.
@ Kane,
Yes...I think the single tip will win the race.........
Still a little bit of progression here......moving along slowly. The motor for #1 is almost done......#2 is getting close, and started on #3.............
I made a "foam" air cleaner element.......but in hind sight, probably need not have bothered...
The clearance from air cleaner to inner guard is too close to allow for removal... Oh well, I may just display it off....
Finally got all the plug leads sorted too...
As well as the heater hoses. Tamiya only show a hose hook up like a heater "delete" option.
I checked some reference pics to find how the hoses should connect, and made mine like that.
Then I made the rest of the fuel system.
New supply and return lines bent up from .7mm solder, secured in place with home made brackets.
I made insulating sleeves from plastic tube.
Brake lines were also added at this time....
The kit fuel filter looked slightly under scale....??? So I made a new one. I think mine is a tad too large....
T E A S E R ..................
And I finalised the throttle linkage on the firewall the other day.....Man, this was tricky to sort out.......
So that's where we're up to.....Still a LOOOONG ways to go..............
I've been messing with the blue car too, re-doing the wheel arch flares and trying a new ride height......pics of that later.
As well as making a start on #3.
More soon guys
cheers
Greg
