Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
Is this car ever going to be finsihed it seems like yesteryear that you started building it and it's grown into some sort of monster with so much good gear on it and great ideas, it makes me feel like pulling down my safari car and starting again but this time put more care and effort into it so it looks much better than I can realy do. This Datsun so far is one great machine and if it was for real I'd be one proud owner of it, hell I'd be proud ot own it as a 1/12th model, so far well done on the work Greg.

No longer will the side of the box say glue and paint required. It will now say Screwdrivers and spanners required for assembly. Bloody awesome work mate.

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
Thanks Kane, Rocket, Bear, Paul, Dingo, Ash and Oz...
Update...June.
Ok, well to keep things rolling whilst awaiting more tiny nuts and bolts to arrive, I decided to look into the brake system...
In their wisdom, Tamiya actually added tiny stubs to the brake calipers and such, but no tubing to connect it all up....Not even a mention in the manual...
Being such a large car, this omission would be glaringly obvious, even to a novice.....and the hand brake (e-brake)...Not even represented.... :| That's where I start.......
Though the e-brake is fairly well obscured by the exhaust and tail shaft, it will still be visible....so I decided to make up this component myself.
This is a break down of what I made...the base and just some simple linkages....Tiny RBMotion nuts'n'bolts hold it all together...
And just a rough mock up to check it.....
Threw a dull coat of metallic paint on, the whole mechanism will get a dirty wash once it's all in place....
It fits in the tunnel, just ahead of the diff. The lever off to the side will connect via a rod to the actual hand brake handle..
Also got to work on the interior....a start at least......
The glove box lid is molded quite thick....about 3mm.....YUK.! It would not have mattered, had I decided to just glue it in place.....
But I guess you'll know me better by now.....
Thoughts are to maybe add some tiny globes/neons to the dash and glove box....?? See how we go. I do have some that were destined for another project...
And.........FINALLY....the tyres are BOTH completed.......YAY !!!
I'm on a 6-day break, so I hope to get a reasonable amount done in that time......Stay tuned guys.....
Cheers
Greg

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
Hey, thanks Paul, Andy and Tim.....
Slight update of modified handbrake assembly.......
After several "test fits", I could see there was going to be tears when it come time to glue it all in......
Even after modding the diff mount ( I trimmed about 2mm out of that...) the fit was still going to be real close.........
Not wanting to risk re-building the whole thing, I modified the base, with a new aluminium shaft and a couple of bolts to hold it together.....
I also cut a hole in the floor of the tunnel, so the base now sits flush.......Much better, and saving another millimeter....
Here is the final draft, dry fitted, and connected to the handbrake handle......
And.....
Handbrake....................OFF..
Handbrake............................ON....
I'm really hoping to get some paint splashed on this chassis tomorrow or over the weekend, as I want to start fitting all these bits.... :|
Stay tuned guys, and thanks for being so patient with me.....
cheers
Greg

Dispite sharing the same first name i'm really starting to dislike you. Nobody should be able to have that much patience and skill to achieve what you have. Have you been checked for O.C.D.??
Only jokin Greg, but your attention to detail is leaving me feeling a little inferior Brilliant as usual!!

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
Thanks Greg, Steve and Paul....
I'm just pleased you guys are enjoying it......maybe not as much as me... and I'm pleased to be able to share with you guys..
Ok...where's Rocket..? Got some "true flame" paint for ya to check out...............................................Nah, just kiddin', but I do have paint.....
Yesterday I finalized the chassis prep....adding brake line brackets, front and rear, two small guides (in the tunnel) to hold the handbrake cables,
and I glued the spare wheel holder in place....It's still kinda rough, but most of it gets covered by the fuel tank anyways....
The paint does look a bit blotchy or dull in spots, but it will all get a dirty "wash" when it's all complete.....
I was a little concerned when I noticed how much these two sink marks stood out.....on top of both fenders....
But, it's kool....the main body will cover them.......(sigh of relief...)
I also got the majority of the rear suspension components painted as well, so I'll be able to start assembly today....
Hopefully, another update for you'll soon guys......
cheers

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
Thanks Tim, HAMMOSZED and Shoey....
Shoey, hope she'll be on display at QMHE, only at the Club table....I hope it's on wheels by then......
Small update.....
Well, I haven't had a lot of time the past week or so, but I have managed a few small improvements.....
First, I made some brackets and fittings for the rear brake backing plates. These will attach the E-brake cables.
Also decided to widen the rear wheel housings...the gap which was present, between them and the body work was unsightly to say the least...
Got some detail painting done on the diff centre and mount as well.....just resting in place here. I'll add fuel and brake lines before fixing permanently...
Over view of the chassis, fuel tank in place (not glued), new wider rear wheel tubs and just visible, fuel neck hole at very bottom of pic....
Short fuel outlet hose, home made clamp...blocked off with a bolt.........
Fuel return line is next to it, and of course, the new fuel outlets are on the bottom now....
Fuel cap..........NISM-O label is from a 1/24 GT-R kit.....
I'm really hoping to get some of the suspension bolted in this week....and I now have the fuel and brake lines all mapped out.....
More soon guys, and thanks again for your patience on this one........
cheers
