Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
Will you be making sure all the block connectors on the wiring harness are the correct shape?
Wiring under the dash?
Speedo that twitches if you spin the wheels?
Restorers of 1:1 Dattos will be able to use this as a reference piece.
You can't see but i'm muttering to myself and shaking my head as I back away from the monitor.

Beautiful work. It looks like it start first turn of the key.
What did you use to make your brackets?
You either know these cars back to front or you have extremely good reference material.

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
Thanks so much guys for your nice comments and support..
Tubbs,
No......no V8 yet..........................give me time, I've just started #3, maybe I still need #4......
Hmmm, ready for QMHE.......this year you ask..................................I'll get back to you on that.
Fred and Kane,
Cheers guys. I have a stash of photos I can't climb over, plus a Haines 240Z repair manual........ but no 1:1 sadly.......
Fred, I have a set of block connectors (bike detail set).....just need to drill 1000's of tiny holes for wiring........................................
Kane, all the brackets I've made so far have been cut from aluminium sheet. It's about the same thickness as a coke can.
Hey Tom, that sounds about right to me....I was only 25 when I started it...................
UPDATE !!
Well, I've been spending so much time on the "stock" build lately, I thought I should at least try and update the original blue beast......
So.......this passed weekend, that's what I did.
I had been stalling doing this next step, cause I knew what was involved........
Installing the triple carbs.
They were given a light undercoat with gun metal, then top coated with champagne gold.
Holes were drilled prior to painting, to accept fuel lines and linkage.
Throttle linkage on each carb is made from "rolled" (= flattened) .5mm solder, drilled to take RBMotion ball joints.
The main rail for the throttle linkage was also installed on the intake runners, again, more solder linkage brackets fitted....
And I also re-made some plug leads. The first set were inadequate.......
So there you have it.......an entire weekends work.
More soon guys.....I hope to get the rest of the throttle connected and plug leads on over the next night or three....
cheers
Greg

I'm a bit disapointed you haven't bothered making scale spark plugs...
It's this sort of mad genius obsession and attention to detail that makes the world a much more interesting place.

Hahaha...Fred, I don't believe this is taking so long myself....3 years, 11 months and still going.tezza43 wrote:Hey Stump - any more progress on this one? I just can't wait for the next chapter (hard to believe this started 18 months ago).
Well, after such a long break from the bench, it was high time I got my a### back into gear.... A slight deviation towards diecast was short lived thank goodness.
They are way too difficult to cut up and modify.
So, with a new invigorating lease on life, I dug into the storage cabinet and got these out again.
Some MAJOR changes are planned. Though they really only involve motor swaps.
The first (original) build of the Fairlady 240ZG will now be getting a highly modified RB26 motor from a Fujimi GTR kit.
Test fitting the "stock" RB to gain a gauge on space and fitment...(NOTE: already a modified plenum in place...to be changed....)
I knew from the get-go that I didn't want this left stock.....No way.
So, after an intensive search, I found reasonable pics to help make these....Exposed cam gears.
And... some new after-market cam covers.
The two vent pipes on top have been trimmed off....they were fouling the hood. So some RBMotion fittings will now be used.
NEW inlet runners and plenum. Making a new fuel rail as well....
And a quick mockup test.....
The second build (stock version 240Z) will still be relatively stock, with a few added options.
After careful consideration it was decided to replicate (close to it) the real car which inspired my build up of the OS-Giken motor.
The car from TOMITAKU in Japan.
This guy was so helpful during my research that I felt it only fitting to make this car.
The third build will be a STOCK Fairlady 240ZG, with my wheels of course.
It will get the completely stock motor I have already assembled.
More as it happens guys, and thanks for stopping by.
Cheers
Greg

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
Hey guys, what's new?
Man, how long has it been?.........Don't answer that.
Well, after an on again-off again romance with the real world, I've stepped back in time to catchup on some projects.
Life really can get in the way at times, and it does suck, just like they say...
I've been attempting to get back at my bench for a year now, and its only been possible over the last few months.....still very sporadic.
Tubman, Allan, Tezza, frozono and mgy125, I hope you guys can forgive me for such a huge gap in time between visits.
My bench time has been fruitful with a fair amount of activity.
To begin, I now have 2 x builds closing in on their final stages......yeah right, we'll see how long that takes.
The "stock" Tomitaku version is sitting on 4 wheels.....yes, you read that right, it now sits on the display shelf......but still needs painting, so it aint finished yet.
This build, which actually got me started on these things is coming along.....
From where we left off way up above, the motor has grown into something a little bit wilder....NO Tubs, no LS1 yet......not this time.
Because I decided to run a monster single turbo, a custom set of headers had to be made up.
Started with LOTS of styrene rod, made lots of bends and half loops, then cut them all up.
Started adding sections, a piece at a time, trying to replicate how they build these things in the big Zorst shops.
Once happy, I added the plate/flange and give it all a few coats of paint....
Timing gear......
I then moved back to the inlet side, making up a set of injectors and the loom to fire them.
Continues.......

Re: 1/12 Tamiya Datto 240ZG with "options"
Once the exhaust header and turbo flange were done, I could fab up the monster dump pipe.
This was of course, wrapped with a heat proof bandage (Medical tape) and painted.
I also added some O2 sensors to it.
It was about this time I received a distress call from a mate in Italy looking for a dash assembly....Did I have a spare he could have?
Of course I did, I have 4 of the f******* laying around now.
Besides, I still had an OLD dash from a Safari kit I had as a kid.......But, when I dug it out, it was in pretty bad shape, worse than I'd thought.
So, with the adrenalin kicking in, I quickly got out the Fujimi box...the 1/12 doner for the motor.
Some measuring and checking showed that with some effort, the GTR dash would go in........just........
It required some trimming of the sides, but nothing drastic, plus I added the tail section from the 240 console.
Test fit........
A LOT of work has gone into the suspension/wheel/tyre combination..........
I'm using my Wats centres I had made, but I wanted something that looked F A T when finished.....So I decided on using the chrome outer rims from the Porsche kit, and the Porsche tyres.
These things are F A T !!!
Suspension got an overhaul by reconstructing complete NEW rear shocks, necessary to clear the tyres.
I also wanted WICKED CAMBER........
So........................ (fronts will have more camber when finished....)
Rear...................
And just the last few days, I sent the motor in for a freshen up.....new coat of paint and some trim details.
Adding a few oil and coolant lines ready for when she drops into place.....
And thats about it.....have made the front mount intercooler and made room for it. (body to chassis clearance) and also made a larger core radiator.
More will follow soon guys, with a few weeks off over the festive season, I hope to get a bit done...
Thanks for stopping in for a look
Cheers
Greg

Great stuff. this thing is mind numbing. I somehow don't think this will be ready for our show in Feb.
But it would be good to see you make it up this way!
