The Amber Queen – ’57 Ford Taildragger
Wrapped this one up over the weekend.
It's the old AMT kit – nosed, decked, frenched and shaved. I added custom side trim, cruiser skirts, dummy spots, a tube grill and twin aerials out the back. I also did a bit of filling up around the front wheel arches just to keep the peak going around the corner past the headlights and to make the lines a bit more smooth and flowing. The wheels are from the ’57 T-bird kit but the rest is pretty much out of the kit.
I really enjoyed this build. For some reason everything just went together right for a change!

Re: The Amber Queen – ’57 Ford Taildragger
Must be 100 gallons of moonshine in the boot, judging by the way it's draggin' its tail?? Of course moonshiners heavied up the rear springs to compensate for that.
Beautiful build Bryce - and a stunning interior too.

Re: The Amber Queen – ’57 Ford Taildragger
Sweet work Bryce Awesome colours! One question though, how do you get the ride height so low on the old 50's cars? Im trying to lower my '49 Merc and Ive cut the leaf springs in the rear and lowered the front but it still sits pretty high. Will I have to tub the rear? Or is there something im missing?

Every car is different and I try to do as little work as possible these days. With this one I had to separate the diff from the leaf springs and make up some very, very tall lowering blocks. This pushed the diff up higher in the chassis, so I had to grind away some of the chassis rail and moulded in exhaust. I also removed the moulded in front spring mounts, and cut away the floor, so the leaf springs actually attach to the bottom of the interior tub now. Of course, raising the diff that high means the tailshaft will no longer fit in the tunnel, so I usually cut out the moulded in trans tunnel on the chassis pan and just use the one on the interior tub. However on this one I had to actually cut some of the interior tub tunnel away under the rear seat too. I also chopped the top of the rear tyres off so they fit snug up into the rear wheel wells…
Other tricks I have used on different cars include cutting off the rear of the chassis and reattaching it at a higher point (Z-ing), de-arching the rear springs (flattening the curve) and flipping the rear springs upside down. You just have to try and work out the easiest way for your particular application.

Nope - it started as a copper auto lacquer which I top coated with Tamiya clear orange, but it looked a bit brown, so I used some Testor's One Coat 'fiery orange' to get lots of flake and then top coated that one with clear orange to get the candy look.
Thanks again for the nice words everyone.
