1950 Ford F-1 Nastruck
Started this one about 4 months ago.
The original idea was to put as much of the Nastruck goodies into the old pickup, making a cool sleeper. But I soon realised the 1950 was really narrow compared to the Nastruck and getting the roll cage etc in there would be impossible. So I decided to cut up the body and make it fit around the frame. All this was done with the back edge of a no.11 blade.
I hung each panel on the frame and then used temporary supports on the outer to hold the shape and then filled all gaps from the inside with strips, then I sheeted over each seem from the inside. This took ages to get right.
Every panel has been cut and altered to fit perfectly over the Nastruck frame using temporary supports and filling from the inside. The body is actually quite strong and can take some force.
There's a few pics to get you guys up to speed so I'll let them do the taking.
I'm still fine tuning the body but I have started on the chassis. The good thing about having this body fit straight over the Nastruck chassis is the rest of the build should be pretty easy and I love how it looks!

The first thing that came to mind was the old king gee add, "IF IT WAS ANY TOUGHER, IT WOULD RUST!!".
Awsome work on that body mate, imagination is working over time, am really looking forward to seeing this go further.

That's the way mate! Move out of the comfort zone of "Oh it won't fit, new idea" (Not that you had a comfort zone )
I'm loving the stance and idea, keep it up!

Re: 1950 Ford F-1 Nastruck
Wow. That's awesome (correct usage, I am in awe of your filling and sanding skills).
Excellent work.
It was a lot easier to fit a '58 Chev body over a NASCAR chassis. I'll repost the pics...

Re: 1950 Ford F-1 Nastruck
Thanks very much guys, glad you all like it so far, I'll keep the pics coming
I sure did chop the heck out of it, that was the fun part and it only took a couple days. Getting it all back together was still fun (sort of) but it took forever to get it to primer stage. The bonnet was the hardest to build because I wanted to keep the centre peek (or whatever its called). I thought the best way would be to cut the bonnet into three, that way the peek would still be there instead of cutting it in two down the middle. I think cutting it in two would've been easier, at least there would've been some angles to work with. The three pieces made it hard to get all the angles right and be perfectly matching to the other side.
Painted the chassis today, man it feels good to lay down some paint after 4 months of sanding!
Cheers!

Re: 1950 Ford F-1 Nastruck
4 months of sanding?
Pah, amateur. I've been sanding a custom mini body for about 3 years and it still isn't quite right...

That's nothing, my wife has been sanding the bottom of her feet for almost 60 years now and still isn't happy with them.

Re: 1950 Ford F-1 Nastruck
Is she noticeably shorter?
Mrs z uses this strange milk based stuff that makes all the dead skin soften and fall off. It's disgusting. Her feet end up looking like they've died and been left in a river for a week.

Re: 1950 Ford F-1 Nastruck
Now that you mention it she is shorter than all our children...so either they have grown or she has gotten shorter. Probably both.
Fortunately I have been spared the dead river foot look so far.

Re: 1950 Ford F-1 Nastruck
The roll cage and chassis is almost stock. I had to replace the A pillars and cut the rear roll cage supports so I could slip the cab over the cage.
Painted with Tamiya - bare metal and rubber on the cage and clear smoke over light gun metal on the chassis.
Going for a grey theme with this build. A few different shades of grey, 50 maybe, mixed in with some black and silver. Body will more than likely be dark gun metal grey with black torn nose scallops.

Re: 1950 Ford F-1 Nastruck
You'd be better off using a 4 inch grinder and a flapper disc Fred, cuts sanding time right down, just need to use scratch fill primer afterwards.zenrat wrote:4 months of sanding?
