scrap steel model art
I make different things out of scrap and reject steel from where I work.....I like the raw look of steel, the rough look of steel and the toughness,,,all the pieces are clear coated to stop the surface rust,,,,
I will post pics as I have time and will try and post some pics part way through the builds
I usually go through the recycling steel bin at work and see what reject gears and bushes are there or machine the offcuts to suit what I want,,same with the sheet metal lots of cutting and fabrication and welding to get some of the shapes
the hardest part was to learn to let the different models turn out to be what they are,,,there not exactly like what I had pictured, but hey that's art for you
the coupe,,,,love the shape of this car,,i have a heap of diecast models in different scales to give you an idea of its size,,1;18 next to it
[
the van,,,my spin on the 1977 ford showcar ,,concord xc panelvan about 50cms long
XE falcon Phase 6 ,,,60cms long
rod,,sort of thing lol
F100 1960ish
time for some of the trucks,,the tanker truck is a money box for the family,,,,truck and trailor are 1 metre long and weight about 26 kilos
mining truck,,reminds me of when I was a kid,,thanks Tonka toys
2nd prime mover
flat nose dump truck
time for bed,,,,will add some more pics soon,,,,, star wars Xwings and Tie fighters,,,space shuttle,,,THUNDERBIRD 2

Bloody hell mate, they're all fantastic. I'm nearly speachless, I seen motor bikes, etc made out of metal in gift shops before, but these are so far above in showmanship and quality that the giftshop ones aren't in the race. 10 out of 10 in my books.

Re: scrap steel model art
This is beautiful, beautiful art. Far beyond the gift shop novelties mentioned above that we sometimes see. You have a style uniquely your own, a real feeling for the metal. That's why I like the "rod,,sort of thing lol" so much. But the masterpiece, if I had to pick one, is the family money box, the tanker truck. The "coupe", too, has gorgeous lines and edges. Thanks so much for sharing. I'm looking forward to the next batch!

Re: scrap steel model art
Far out.
Have you coated the steel? What's stopping it rusting?

Re: scrap steel model art
Cool table. You have the eye... You refer to your family. Given the size of your works and the apparent fact that they appear to be all over your home, they must be very supportive and proud of your creations! I know if there was someone in my household who did things at this level I would be!
BTW, in the picture of the van on the table it looks like it might have an interior, or is that just an effect of the lighting from below?

the picture with the van was taken on a stormy night,,my daughters had some candles out and were playing around taking photoes,,,and decided the van was the best place to hide the candel ,,i havent started the interior yet,,but i will make sure its fire proof

Re: scrap steel model art
thanks for all responses,,,,,there inspiring.
time for my spin on the SPACE SHUTTLE.....
I bought a tiny small model at the airport and thought why not make a larger one,,,so off to the scrap bin I went.....I found some material including some old pipe that was really badly rusted and pitted which I knew wouldn't cleanup aswell as some of the cars and trucks ,so this model is painted,,,,and its a 1st for me,,im not very good when it comes to painting or colours,,,,,lucky for me its a simple paint job on the shuttle,,lol.
you will notice that the rocket boosters and main fuel tank are not exactly the same as the original ,,but there pretty close considering what scrap was sitting around,,,,,
the completed model is over 30 kilos and nearly a meter long ,,,I machined up and mounted two bearing blocks in the middle of the center fuel tank so the shuttle can rotate 360 degrees on it axis ,,,and it also rotates 360 degrees on it base,,,so every few days the postion gets changed to see a different view,,,,,mounted in the base is a lamp so at night time you get different reflections around the room and walls
the following pics give you an idea what is under the paint
