tamiya clear yellowing decals Empty tamiya clear yellowing decals

Post by harley fan Thu 10 Feb 2011, 3:42 pm

just came upon a huge problem when i put tamiya ts 13 clear over the decals on my s29 build, the decals started to turn a yellow tint in places, they were printed on white decal film which blends nice with the white base colour, but after clear coating there is a yellow tint where it should blend in with the base coat, would anyone have an idea where i have gone wrong apart from the obvious and not to clear over decals, i am not a regular user of tamiya spray cans but this project is all tamiya cans from primer to clear, i never had this problem with humbrol enamel when i cleared over decals in the past, any hints would be gratefully appreciated regards harley fan

Not your fault...it is a chemical reaction. Most clear coats will yellow over time... (I have a Camaro that is now a lovely shade of Ivory that was once white)...but once in awhile there will be one like yours. You can't predict it.

2k clears won't yellow over time or cause decal problems.
I use Tamiya clear and never had a problem with it, I would say its the decals, were they home made, bought, good quality etc?

the decals were made for me and printed on a laser printer very good quality decal paper, went onto the model real nice (very matt finish though, that is why i went for a gloss clear coat) would love to learn how to use 2k clear, don't know the first thing about it though, might have to google it to find out more, thanks for the reply regards harley fan

I use a flat clear as a first coat to lock in the decals before they start to lift then when that dries hit i with some gloss. Ive had no probs that way but then again i might just be lucky so far! LOL
