Clear for Tamiya decals.
Hi guys,
Just wondering which clear to use over Tamiya decals? The obvious answer would be Tamiya but I was talking to a guy the other day that said it destroys them.
Any help would be appreciated as I've got a build that I want to so with a lot of decals.
Cheers,
Josh.

Re: Clear for Tamiya decals.
Dont know about Tamiya decals but dont use Tamiya clear over Slixx decals either I'd recommend Duplicolor BUT please test on a scrap piece first.
Re: Clear for Tamiya decals.
I have used Tamiya clear over Tamiya decals but it can be a bit of a lottery, as was said always try to test first . Also if you are using Tamiya clear and your decal goes over a gap like a door line or something like that always get the decal to set right down in the groove or the Tamiya clear will get under it and crinkle it . Hope this helps a bit.

Re: Clear for Tamiya decals.
The trick with clear over decals is to sneak up on them - build up mist coats gradually.
As far as decals over panel gaps go it bugs me to see an otherwise perfect build with decals running straight across the panel gaps with no effort made to make it look like there is a gap there. Quite a few of the recent Centrefold builds in Scale Auto mag have had this problem.
I let the decals dry and then cut along the panel gap with a fresh blade. I then apply Micro Sol to get the decal to snuggle down into the gap.

Re: Clear for Tamiya decals.
Thanks for the advice guys. Have decided not to clear over the decals as they would have been vinyls on the real car anyways.
Will definately keep in mind how to do it if I need to though.

Josh.

rekon that putting clear over decals is a must, i have found that if they r not cleared they wil eventually crack and peel (may take a few years but it will happen)

I have had recent success with Mr Hobbys clear. Acrylic Lacquer like Duplicolour is too hot, the solvents will gobble decals.

Re: Clear for Tamiya decals.
Now, these are all in my experience and I don't do much decaling (and a lot of what I do is self printed) so don't kill me if you follow my advice & f*** up your decals, but...
Zero Paints 2 pack clear is OK.
Tamiya clear is OK (it f***ed the paint but the decals were fine).
White Knight Krystal Clear Acrylic (from Bunnings, comes in a rattle can - gloss or satin) is OK.
